Mines invades for Skyhawks 2026 home opener

2/27/2026 10:00:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – For the first time this year, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks softball team (1-13, 0-4 RMAC) will take to the home dirt of Aspen Field up on the rim to play host to Colorado School of Mines (6-8, 2-2 RMAC) for a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series on Saturday and Sunday.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis is coming off a tough road trip to Metropolitan State University of Denver (9-3, 4-0 RMAC) in which the Roadrunners swept the RMAC-opening series four games to none. The Skyhawks did, however, push MSUD to 11 innings in game two, lost two games by a single run, and held a lead in the series finale before MSU Denver slugged its way to victory in the final frames. Most importantly, Fort Lewis proved to itself it's never out of it, exploding for seven runs on five hits in game two of the series, coming all the way back to tie up a seven-run deficit in just three outs. In addition, the Skyhawks took an early lead in the series finale, stepping up to make key plays in critical moments to keep MSUD off the scoreboard before its high-slugging offense found just enough space to break-open in a single frame.

Slow Growth
The Skyhawks are a young squad, but have played the 26th-ranked most difficult schedule in Division II thus far, even posting a 3-2 win in eight innings on Jan. 31 over currently No. 1 nationally ranked California State University San Marcos (14-1, 0-0 CCAA). Among RMAC opponents, Fort Lewis ranks fifth in fielding (.960 fielding percentage), ninth in pitching (6.02 earned run average), and 11th in batting (.222 team average). Sophomore Chloe Padilla ranks sixth in the RMAC in total innings (34.0) and ninth in batters struck out (19). Offensively, Skyler Dietz is the only Skyhawk with a +300 average, batting .308 in her 10 games thus far with eight hits, including a double and a triple, and five runs scored. Alyssa Fockler leads all players with 13 hits and eight runs scored while matching Carmen Alexander, who leads the team with four doubles, for six runs batted in. The pair also owns the only two Fort Lewis home runs this year.
