Mann’s masterpiece keys in first pair of RMAC wins for Skyhawks softball

Dietz, Alexander pace Fort Lewis offense en route to 2-0 series lead

DURANGO, Colo. – Hailie Mann posted a masterful performance in the circle in game one, and the Skyhawks' offense caught fire for a season-high nine runs on 10 hits in game two, powering the Fort Lewis softball team (3-21, 2-12 RMAC) to a 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series lead over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (11-12, 5-9 RMAC) at home on Aspen Field.

Fort Lewis needed just two arms in the circle to earn both wins, with Mann (2-5) and Chloe Padilla (1-10) each toeing the rubber for their fifth and eighth complete games of the season, respectively. Skyler Dietz stayed level across the day, recording two hits in both games to finish the day with two runs scored, a walk, and one run batted in (RBI) without a strikeout. Mia Cueva notched a career-high three hits in game one, and Alex Tenorio, Carmen Alexander, and Trista Hoobler joined Dietz with two hits each in game two. Alexander led all Skyhawks with three RBIs.

Fort Lewis 1, UCCS 0 (10 Inn.)
Mann was masterful in game one of the series en route to her second victory of the season, posting 104 strikes in 147 total pitches (70.7 percent) through her 10.0 innings of work. Mann scattered 10 hits and two walks, but struck out four Mountain Lions to leave 12 runners stranded on base.

UCCS managed a few hits throughout the early innings, putting its first scoring threat on third base in the top of the sixth inning. After coming up empty, the Mountain Lions threatened again with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but Tenorio snagged a line drive to end the frame. In a near identical heart-racing fashion, Mann would snag a line drive in the top of the eighth, Tenorio a diving grab in the ninth, and Mann a ground ball once more in the 10th to keep UCCS scoreless.

In the home half of what would be the final inning, Tenorio drew a lead-off walk before Mia Cueva and Dietz posted back-to-back singles to load the bases. On the second pitch that she saw, Alexander lifted a fly ball to left field, allowing Tenorio to swipe home and end the ball game on Alexander's second sacrifice fly and team-leading 11th RBI.

Autumn Kunze (5-2) was lights-out in her 7.0 innings of work, holding FLC to four hits and one walk against three strikeouts. Kailey Bond (3-4) was dealt the loss, allowing the game-winner on three hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch (HBP).

Fort Lewis 9, UCCS 8
Following a pitcher's duel in game one, both squads seemingly agreed to light up the scoreboard in game two, both scoring five runs in their respective halves of the first inning. UCCS capitalized on five hits, including a trio of RBI-singles, an HBP, and a sacrifice fly. Fort Lewis needed just three hits to match the Mountain Lions' scoring effort, using a bases-loaded double from Hoobler, a passed ball, an RBI-HBP by Izzy Cueva, and an RBI walk to McKenna Timmons.

Following a pair of quiet innings, the Mountain Lions broke through for their first lead of the series, 6-5, thanks to a two-out RBI-double off the bat of Tayler McCombs that dribbled down the left-field line. The lead lasted all of six outs as Alexander met the moment once more in the bottom of the fifth, belting a moonshot of a home run over the fence in left field to tie the ballgame at six all on her third long-ball of the year.

The Mountain Lions took charge once again, 7-6, in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single poked down the right field line by Mackenzie Scott. Abby Hayes (1-1) came in on relief in the bottom of the frame, and the Skyhawks went right after her, scoring Paige Fuller, who followed up a lead-off single with a stolen base, on a base hit to left field by Tenorio, who somehow escaped a run-down on a defensive miscue by UCCS. Dietz and Alexander would follow suit the following at-bats, stringing together back-to-back singles to put Fort Lewis ahead with a two-run cushion, 9-7. UCCS would plate one final run on an Addy Baxter sacrifice fly.

Padilla picked up her first win of the year with nine hits, eight earned runs, seven walks, five strikeouts, a wild pitch, and an HBP on her ledger. Hayes was dealt the loss, surrendering the final three runs on four hits with one strikeout.
