Skyhawks claim 3-1 series win over Grizzlies

Alexander matches program single-game home run and RBI records

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyler Dietz drove in one of three runs to secure a 3-2 victory in game one, and Carmen Alexander belted back-to-back jacks in game two to secure a thumping 12-4 victory and power the Fort Lewis Skyhawks softball team (6-28, 5-19 RMAC) to a 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series win over the Adams State University Grizzlies (7-27, 6-18 RMAC) on Aspen Field.

Game One – Fort Lewis 3, Adams State 2
Fort Lewis worked its second win of the series behind a strong outing from Izzy Cueva (1-3) in the circle. The freshman from Vacaville, Calif., earned her first win of the season, holding the Grizzlies to just two hits and a pair of unearned runs despite five walks and two hit batters (HBP). Cueva struck out two in her second complete game of the season.

Adams State jumped on the scoreboard first, using an Ali Davis run-batted-in (RBI) single to left field, which was followed by a Skyhawks error, to score all the way from first base in the top of the second inning. Denae Ojeda singled back through the middle to score Davis and go up 2-0 the following at-bat.

The Skyhawks wouldn't trail for long, however, as Alyssa Fockler doubled down the left field line just inside of the third-base bag, driving in Skyler Dietz from first base after a throw to second attempted to cut down Fockler. Allieghfaye Abbie and Alex Tenorio worked a pair of walks to keep the second inning going, and Fockler and Stella Romeo, who singled to reach safely, both swiped home on a pair of wild pitches for the 3-2 advantage.

Both teams went on to combine for just two hits through the final 4.5 innings. Aubree Davis (2-3) took the loss, surrendering three earned runs on three hits, two walks, and a pair of wild pitches against one strikeout in 2.0 innings of work. Aryana Munoz (2-8) was near-perfect in her 4.0 innings of relief, posting just one hit, one walk, a wild pitch, and two strikeouts.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 12, Adams State 4 (6 Inn.)
The Skyhawks grabbed an early 2-0 lead, riding the momentum from their game one win, first using a pair of strikeouts from Hailie Mann (3-7) to cut down the Grizzlies in the top-half of the first inning before scoring twice in the home-half of the inning. Alex Tenorio doubled down the left field line to open the frame, and Mia Cueva and Izzy Cueva followed suit with an RBI single and an RBI double, respectively.

Fort Lewis' offensive success continued an inning later in the second, with Trista Hoobler grounding out to second base to score Stella Romeo, who reached on a fielder's choice before Allieghfaye Abbie scorched a double down the left field line for her second collegiate hit to put Romeo on third. Carmen Alexander poured in another two runs an inning later with a two-RBI single to left field that found its way through the left fielder's legs.

Adams State came roaring back in the top of the fourth to pull within one run, 5-4, putting together four runs on five hits, including an RBI infield single from Kaylee Eyl and a bases-clearing three-RBI double off the right field fence from Ojeda.

Alexander felt a one-run lead wasn't comfortable enough, and with two outs, sent a four-RBI grand slam to the left field bleachers for her fourth home run of the season to reextend the lead, 9-4. Later in the home-half of the fifth, Tenorio kept the bats hot with another two-RBI single through the left side. Alexnader decided to send everyone home in her next at-bat in the bottom of the sixth as she sent a solo home run over the left-field fence to institute the run-rule walk-off and become the first Skyhawk to hit back-to-back jacks since 2024 and tie the program records with two homers in a game and seven total RBIs.
