No. 17 Cougars overpower Skyhawks in Sunday doubleheader

Fort Lewis surrenders 21st-straight loss to Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The No. 17 nationally ranked Cougars from Colorado Christian University (20-2, 10-0 RMAC) swept day one of the two-day, four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series on Sunday afternoon at All-Star Park, utilizing 18 total hits and nine extra-base hits to defeat Fort Lewis College (1-19, 0-10 RMAC) 8-3 in game one and 11-1 through six innings in game two.

Fort Lewis put up 10 hits of its own on the day, striking out just nine times in total across the 39 total outs provided, but 11 runners left on base and four errors limited the Skyhawks chances in closing the gaps. Alejandra Medina stayed hot, hitting her third home run over the last four games. Alex Tenorio stood with Medina as the only pair of Skyhawks with two or more hits on the day, with Tenorio leading the squad with three total hits, including a pair of doubles and runs-batted-in (RBI). Four different Cougars enjoyed multi-hit games.

The Cougars lived up to their national ranking in the first bout, erupting for six runs on four hits and one of three Skyhawks errors in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone. After a pair of walks and the error, CCU strung together three-consecutive doubles from Leah Garcia, Maya Schroeder, and Peyton Marvel before Paisley Williamson swiped the sixth run on a double-steal. Williamson later singled to center field in the home half of the third to drive in the final two runs.

Felesha Lepenske (7-0) toed the rubber for Colorado Christian, boasting the seventh-lowest earned run average (ERA) in the RMAC at 2.75, and delivered 5.0 innings of quality work, surrendering just one earned run on four hits, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch (HBP). Hanna Espinoza (3-0) came in on relief, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in her final 2.0 innings of work while leading Lepenske in strikeouts, two to one.

Medina saw a beach ball yet again, launching her team-leading third home run for a solo shot to right-center in the top of the fifth inning. Tenorio tried to spark a Fort Lewis comeback at the top of the final inning, firing a ground-rule double to left field to score a pair. Chloe Padilla (0-9) took the loss in her seventh complete game of the year, finishing the afternoon with six earned runs on seven hits, five walks, and two wild pitches. Padilla set a season-high with seven strikeouts.

Colorado Christian 11, Fort Lewis 1 (6 Inn.)
Game two saw both sides exchange punches in the early going, with Colorado Christian capturing the early lead on a full-count lead-off solo homer from Kat Hanson. Fort Lewis answered and tied the game in the top half of the third, with Tenorio coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Carmen Alexander after first reaching base on an error and moving to third on a single from Skyler Dietz.

The Cougars pulled away once more in the bottom of the fourth inning, capitalizing on a Skyhawks error, a walk, and an HBP with a two-RBI double down the left field line from Abbie Walden. Hanson then grounded out to second to bring in a run before the frame ended. Just an inning later, however, CCU would erupt once more, scoring another three runs in succession on a double, single, and another infield ground out to extend the lead out to 7-1. After back-to-back doubles gave the Cougars another run, Lepenske then sent everyone home for the afternoon with a run-rule walk-off three-run home run over the left field fence.

Lisa Liddell (6-2) cruised to the win, needing just 77 pitches to shut down the Skyhawks for one unearned run on three hits and a pair of walks. Liddell struck out six. Hailie Mann (1-5) took the loss, surrendering 10 earned runs on 11 hits, four walks, and an HBP with one strikeout.
