No. 17 Cougars down Skyhawks twice at All-Star Park

Fort Lewis surrenders series to Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College (1-21, 0-12 RMAC) and Colorado Christian University (22-2, 12-0 RMAC) softball teams wrapped up their four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series on Monday afternoon at All-Star Park with the No. 17-ranked Cougars earning a 13-3 win in five innings in game one before holding off the Skyhawks 6-3 in game two.

Just eight different Skyhawks recorded a hit across all 12 innings, with freshman third-baseman Carmen Alexander pacing the pack with a team-high three hits, including a two-hit performance in game two, and a team-high three runs batted in (RBI). Trista Hoobler, Alex Tenorio, Paige Fuller, and Skyler Dietz all had two hits. Alexander and Dietz recorded their third and second multi-hit games this season, respectively. Fort Lewis cut down to two errors across day two, resulting in a single unearned run for CCU.

Colorado Christian 13, Fort Lewis 3 (5 Inn.)
Top-ranked Colorado Christian showed no signs of slowing down in the early morning showing, firing off 12 hits alongside one Cougar error to force the run-rule in the minimum required innings. Alexander rocked her second home run of the year for two runs early in the top half of the first inning to give the Skyhawks their first opening-lead of the series. Dietz drove in the final Fort Lewis run with a sacrifice fly later in the top of the third.

The hype was short-lived, however, as CCU answered in the bottom of the inning, first with an RBI single from Arriana Wright, and once more with a three-run homer off the bat of Leah Garcia to recapture the lead. Colorado Christian would post another four-run frame in the bottom of the second on the strength of RBI doubles from Kat Hanson and Wright, capped off by a two-run homer from Felesha Lepenske. Another crooked frame came in the home end of the fifth, with the Cougars capitalizing on a sacrifice fly, an RBI single, and a three-run homer from Wright to close out the contest.

Elyse McMullin (5-0) needed just 67 pitches en route to the win, with her ledger featuring two earned runs on six hits against one strikeout. Izzy Cueva (0-3) tossed her first complete game of the year, surrendering 13 earned runs on 12 hits, five walks, and a wild pitch. Izzy Cueva edged McMullin with a pair of strikeouts.

Colorado Christian 6, Fort Lewis 3
Fort Lewis' early offense leaked into game two as Dietz posted a one-out double to left field to score Hoobler, who singled the prior at-bat, for the one-run lead. Colorado Christian responded hastily, recapturing the lead in the bottom half of the first inning on Maya Schroeder's sacrifice fly after Sarah Dollerschell tied it with an RBI single. CCU added an insurance run in the second courtesy of an RBI double from Garcia.

Mia Cueva put the Skyhawks back on the board at the top of the fourth, doubling down the left field line to drive in McKenna Timmons, who reached earlier on a fielder's choice. It was another case of déjà vu in the bottom of the inning as the Cougars responded yet again with back-to-back homers from Dollerschell and Lepenske to go up 6-2. Alexander answered for the Skyhawks in the next half inning with an infield single to third base, but FLC would strand five runners across the final seven outs.

Lisa Liddell (7-2) stood in the circle for the first 5.0 innings, earning the win with two earned runs allowed on six hits and a walk. Hanna Espinoza (3-0) came in on relief, tossing the final 2.0 innings with just two hits and two strikeouts to earn a name in her second save of the year. Chloe Padilla (0-10) was dealt the loss on four earned runs, six hits, two hit-by-pitches (HBP), and a walk. Padilla led all pitchers with three strikeouts. Hailie Mann (1-5) had a strong relief appearance with one earned run on four hits and an HBP.
