Softball splits series with Black Hills State

Padilla secures third win in as many starts

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Chloe Padilla put together another quality start to lead the Skyhawks to an 8-3 victory in the series finale, but the Yellow Jackets opened up the afternoon with a 10-4 win, ultimately forcing the Fort Lewis softball team (13-37, 12-28 RMAC) to split its series 2-2 with Black Hills State University (24-27, 21-19 RMAC) on the neutral site TC Colorado Field at Triple Crown Sports.

Game One – Black Hills State 10, Fort Lewis 4
Offense came early and often for the Yellow Jackets in the early morning, with the opposition scoring at least one run in every trip to the plate, including a pair of crooked three-run frames in the third and sixth innings. BHSU chased out starter Addison Gavigan (0-6) after scoring four earned runs on nine hits and two walks against a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work. Hailie Mann (6-11) came in on relief, surrendering another five earned runs on five hits, five walks, and three hit batters against two strikeouts.

Fort Lewis scattered offense across four of its seven trips to the plate, and even kicked off the contest with the early lead in the top of the first by way of a sacrifice fly ball launched by Rhiannon Lister. Lister went on to add the second run of the game in the third, sending a run-batted-in (RBI) single to right field. Skyler Dietz notched an RBI single in the fifth, and Makenna Milliman an RBI single in the seventh to cap the game.

Black Hills State's Kaitlyn Geschwill (13-10) lived up to her title as the RMAC leader in strikeouts as the junior racked up a season-high 12 punch-outs, matching the most strikeouts by a pitcher in the conference this year. Carli Maley paced BHSU with a 4-for-4 performance, aided by two-out efforts from Carly Reyes Mims and Desi Hernandez.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 8, Black Hills State 3
It took just two crooked frames for Fort Lewis to walk away with a win in game two and knot the series at two games apiece. The Skyhawks erupted for four runs in the top of the second inning, and it was a hit-by-pitch drawn by Alyssa Fockler that started the action. Skyler Dietz capitalized on the momentum, slicing the second pitch she saw down the left field line for a bases-clearing three-RBI triple, her second of the season.

A pair of wild pitches kept the Fort Lewis offense hot an inning later, bringing home a pair of runs before Trista Hoobler's scorching ground ball forced a fielding error and brought in the third run of the inning. Hoobler came around to score from first base as the final run in the next at-bat, thanks to an RBI double down the left field line from Alyssa Fockler.

Chloe Padilla (4-15) cruised to her third win in as many starts, working around seven hits, four walks, and a wild pitch for three earned runs, while also picking up a single strikeout. Sophia Honse (5-7) made the start for BHSU, but exited after 2.0 innings with five unearned runs on two hits on her ledger. Dakoa Poag (2-6) made a brief appearance, surrendering another two runs on one hit and a walk before Paige Goodell (3-4) closed out the final 4.1 innings. Goodell gave up one run on five hits and four walks with a team-high three strikeouts.
