Guerrero snags T-8, Fort Lewis claims fifth in South Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Freshman Paola Guerrero grabbed the first individual top-10 finish for the Skyhawks this season, and the Fort Lewis women's golf team fired off a second-round 305 to claim fifth place overall among 14 teams at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational at Glenmoor Golf Club.

Fort Lewis shaved off one stroke from its first-round 306 (+18) and finished the tournament playing +16 on par threes, a tournament fourth-best +37 on par fours, and +1 on par fives en route to a team total of 611 (+35) to jump two spots on the leaderboard and take fifth overall on the final day. The Skyhawks edged out Menlo College and Texas A&M International University, who tied for sixth, by a single stroke.

Point Loma Nazarene University ran away with the team title, dominating the field with a 14-stroke lead on a one-over-par 577. The Sea Lions all finished inside the top-20, including three inside the top-five, with Annika Yturralde holding on to win individual medalist honors as one of four players under par on a 141 (-3) overall.

Guerrero continued her hot start to her collegiate career, shooting a 74 (+2) and a 73 (+1) en route to a 147 (+3), a T-8 finish, and back-to-back top-25 placements to begin her career. Guerrero carded six birdies and just eight bogeys or worse for the event.

Senior Isabel Bustillos jumped ten spots on the leaderboard as she used a second-round 77 (+5) and a pair of birdies to climb into T-28 with a 155 (+11) overall. Ellie White made the highest climb among Skyhawks in round two, vaulting 17 spots up the leaderboard thanks to a 76 (+4) that put the sophomore at T-33 with a 156 (+12) on the scorecard.

Junior Peyton Gibby climbed a pair of spots on the leaderboard as well, turning in a 79 (+7) with a trio of birdies to grab T-36 with a 157 (+13). Annika Gutierrez rounded out Fort Lewis in T-51 as the senior carded an 83 (+11) in her second round and a 159 (+15) for the event.

Fort Lewis will have two weeks to prepare on home greens before the Skyhawks host the Nick Turner Invitational up on the rim at Hillcrest Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6.
