Skyhawks women in top half of field after round one of Westminster Wasatch Invite

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Paola Guerrero turned in a 74 (+2), Annika Gutierrez a 76 (+4), Peyton Gibby and Isabel Bustillos a 78 (+6) each, and Ellie White an 80 (+8) as the Fort Lewis women's golf team went 18-over-par in the opening round of the Westminster Wasatch Invitational to sit in seventh place among 14 teams.
 
Fort Lewis carded nine birdies and 50 pars, good for the ninth-most and T-5 most in the tournament, respectively, to stand at 306 (+18) overall. The Skyhawks scored +7 on par threes, +17 on par fours, and +2 on par fives to lead eighth-place Menlo College at 309 (+21), and trail sixth-place Texas A&M International University by two strokes at 304 (+16).
 
Point Loma Nazarene University jumped out to a resounding lead, turning in a four-under-par 284 to lead the field by 13 strokes. The Sea Lions boast all three individuals tied for first place: Estibaly Garcia, Annika Yrurralde, and Summer Schafer, as the trio combined for 13 birdies and only six bogeys or worse, while all standing at 70 (-2) after the opening round.
 
Guerrero, a true freshman out of Sahuarita, Ariz., and Sahuarita High School, continues to impress in T-12, scoring a birdie on the opening hole and conceding just three bogeys over the final 17 holes. Gutierrez is two strokes back in T-25 thanks to three birdies, and Gibby and Bustillos follow closely behind in T-38. White, who led all Skyhawks with four birdies, resides in T-50 and is two strokes back of Fort Lewis' top four.
 
Final Round Tomorrow
Tee times for the second and final round of the Westminster Wasatch Invitational are set to begin at 8:50 a.m. Gutierrez is the first Skyhawk to tee off at 9:20 a.m.
