PUEBLO, Colo. — Jamie Cunningham scored in the 20th minute as defending NCAA Division II national champion Fort Lewis College (10-5-2 overall, 9-2-2 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) tied Colorado State University-Pueblo (7-8-1, 6-5-1) today.
Cunningham's fourth goal of the season came after a free kick at 19:55 to give FLC a 1-0 lead.
Joey Madigan and
Byron Cephers assisted on the play which looked for most of the match like it might hold up.
But the ThunderWolves had other plans, eventually tying the score on Chad Smith's header to the upper right corner off a Robert Kinsey pass at 81:09.
The Skyhawks turned up the heat in overtime, but were denied four times by CSUP goalkeeper Jacob Blum, who made four saves in the two extra 10-minute periods. Blum spoiled FLC throughout the day, making 16 saves on the afternoon.
CSU-Pueblo had a few scoring chances of its own in overtime. Jamie Prakhine was stopped by FLC goalkeeper
Ryan Wirth midway through the first overtime, while Kinsey's shot hit the crossbar with 53 seconds remaining in the first extra frame.
The Skyhawks outshot CSUP 24-13 overall, 17-5 in shots on goal. Wirth made four saves on the afternoon.
Fort Lewis concludes its regular season at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, when it hosts Adams State (1-14-0, 1-11-0) at Dirks Field.
