DURANGO, Colo. — No. 7 Metro State (9-1 overall, 2-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) swept Fort Lewis (3-7, 0-2) 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 tonight in Whalen Gymnasium.
“Although the result doesn't suggest it, it was a very positive match for us,” said eighth-year FLC head coach Shelly Aaland. “We played a very good team at their level for most of the match.”
Senior outside hitter Emily Greenhalgh recorded 13 kills in just 25 attempts to finish with a .440 hitting efficiency for the Roadrunners. Senior libero Ngoc Phan notched 18 digs, including 10 in the first set.
Still, Aaland found plenty of positives in the performance of her young Skyhawks — a squad comprised of 14 freshman and sophomores and just two seniors.
“
Kristin Stephan had a great performance,” Aaland said of her 6-foot junior middle blocker who finished with nine kills and a pair of blocks.
“
Hali Groninger's ability at running the court made some great strides tonight,” she added. The sophomore setter had 25 assists and a pair of kills.
The Skyhawks also received a 13-dig effort from sophomore libero
Jenna Kinzer and a seven-kill night from sophomore middle blocker
Taylor Frederking.
The Roadrunners dominated most of the statistics, blistering 40 kills and a .349 hitting percentage, outblocking FLC 9-2, and outdigging the Skyhawks by a 41-33 clip.
The Skyhawks wrap up their three-game homestand when they host No. 25 Regis (9-2, 2-0) at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.
The weekend also marks FLC's Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony and All-Century Team celebration. Seven Skyhawk volleyball alumnae and former coaches are being recognized at the 9 a.m. Sunday ceremony in the Student Union Ballroom. The volleyball contingent on the All-Century Team includes Jessica Copp (1993-96), Adrianne Dettler (2004-07), Julie Koss-Golden (1989-90), Kelly Nanna Moore (1988-90), Liz Palmer (1985-88), Nicole Schwab (2004-07), and original FLC volleyball coach Peppy Seale (1969-85).
