GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Colorado Mesa (5-9 overall, 1-4 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) won a tight, four-set game over Fort Lewis (3-10, 0-5) tonight in Brownson Arena, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23.
“I was pleased by the performance of our middles,” eighth-year FLC head coach Shelly Aaland said. Sophomore middle blockers
Kristin Stephan (eight kills, two blocks, .350 hitting efficiency) and
Taylor Frederking (seven kills, four blocks, .385 attack percentage) again paced the Skyhawks.
Libero
Jenna Kinzer added 15 digs and four service aces.
“Unfortunately, when we get to the point where we need to finish, we begin to play tight and not to lose instead of to win,” Aaland lamented.
That was no more evident than in the fourth set, which saw FLC lead 23-21 only to surrender the final four points of the match, including a pair on hitting errors.
Nagging injuries to outside hitters
Jessica Wilson (hamstring) and
Ashley Wells (knee) limited their effectiveness and forced Aaland to go deep into her bench.
The Mavericks were led by Kelly Regimbal (15 kills, 12 digs, three blocks, .306 hitting percentage), Antoinnette McCormick (11 kills) and Megan Rush (20 digs, two aces).
Colorado Mesa logged 53 kills – 19 more than FLC – and hit .142 as a team. Hitting and serving errors nearly proved CMU's undoing, though, as they committed 31 attack errors and 11 service miscues.
The Skyhawks hit the road next weekend for games at Western New Mexico (7-6, 3-2) at 7 p.m. Friday and New Mexico Highlands (7-6, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
