Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – February 11, 2017 – The Fort Lewis College softball team played their final two games of the West Texas A&M Invitational Saturday from Canyon, Texas. The Skyhawks fell in the morning game to Cameron University, 11-3 (five innings), followed by an 8-6 setback to Washburn University.
"This is a tough way to start the season, but we will take what we need to work on and continue to improve," said head coach
Elle Fracker. "We saw a lot of good things that we have to go off of as well."
In Saturday's opening game against Cameron,
Adriana Rosthenhausler and
Angelique Elemen each recorded two hits as FLC finished the game with three runs on seven hits. Rosthenhausler went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored while Elemen went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
In the top of the first inning, Elemen singled to bring in Rosthenhasuler for the first score of the game.
CU took a 4-1 lead in the second inning and added one more run in the fourth inning before the Skyhawks answered with three runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, Rosthenhausler doubled to right center and then scored on
Gianna Melaragno's triple down the right field line. Elemen drove in Melaragno with her second hit of the game.
Cameron plated six runs in the fifth inning to seal the win, 11-3.
Olivia Bratt worked 2.2 innings for her first loss of the season. Bratt allowed four earned runs on four hits and fanned two batters.
Against the Ichabod's in the final game of the weekend, the Skyhawks made a late comeback with three runs in the seventh inning but fell short, 8-6.
Down 2-0 in the top of the third inning with two outs,
Allison Young reached base on a single followed by Melaragno's double to center field. Elemen brought both home on a double to right field to tie the game at 2-2.
WU regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning with one run, followed by two more in the fourth.
FLC cut the lead to 5-3 when Elemen doubled again to score Melaragno.
The Ichabods took an 8-3 lead in the fifth inning before the Skyhawks started their three-run comeback in the seventh.
Cassie Sloan started the inning off with a double to left field followed by Young's single. Melaragno batted in Sloan for the fourth run of the game before Gilbert batted in Young. Telliano's double to left field scored Melaragno for the sixth and final run of the game.
After seven innings of offense, Young finished with three hits and two runs scored. Melaragno went 3-ofr-4 with three runs scored and a run batted in. Elemen batted in three runs on two hits. Six of the Skyhawks 11 hits were doubles.
FLC (1-4) will travel to Tucson Feb. 17-19 for five games.
