Both Golf Teams Compete at Hillcat Invitationals in Oklahoma

OWASSO, Okla. –The Fort Lewis College golf teams traveled to Oklahoma to compete in the Hillcat Spring Invitational on the men's side and the Hillcat Classic on the women's side Monday and Tuesday. The men placed 10th, while the women came in 11th after the final round concluded today.

On the men's side, FLC fired rounds of 316-308-323 for a 947. Host Rogers State took home the team title with an 879, holding off Lubbock Christian by two-strokes. Three players tied for the individual lead in Arkansas-Fort Smith's Tucker Tovar, Texas A&M-International's Parker Holekamp and Rogers State's Luke Palmowski after all three fired 215's. Tovar ended up winning the title after a playoff hole.

Eric Neal used consistent rounds over the entire tournament to card a 228 and tie for 27th after rounds of 75-77-76. During the final round, he sunk a birdie on hole six and ended up with 12 pars. Darren Edwards continued to lower his score after a first round 81, he came back with scores of 77 and 76 for a 234 to tie for 39th. On Tuesday he compiled birdies on holes three and 10 and added 10 pars. Blake Kuzava collected a 242 with rounds of 82-75-85 to land in 48th. During the final round he sunk a birdie on hole 11 and had 10 pars.
Tyler Blohm was just a few shots back with rounds of 81-79-86 for a 246 to end up in 51st. He had nine pars during the third and final round. Rounding out the five for the Skyhawks was Jack Call who started with rounds of 79 and 80 over the first two rounds before withdrawing from the third and final round.

As a team, Fort Lewis shot 3.45 on par-three, 4.49 on par-four and 5.36 on par-five. Edwards led the team in par-three scoring at 3.25, also in par-four scoring at 4.30 and Neal paced the team in par-five scoring at 4.89. Edwards tallied 32 pars and both Neal and Call tied for the team lead in birdies with six.

On the women's side, the Skyhawks fired rounds of 362 and 366 for a 728, finishing just a few shots back of UT Permian Basin. Oklahoma Christian posted a 613 to hold off Newman by 14-shots to win the invitational. The Eagles also had the top individual in Kate Goodwin who carded a 148 to win by three-shots.

Summer Vigil led the way for FLC as she posted a top-25 finish coming in tied for 24th after scores of 80 and 88 for a 168. Isabella Martinez also finished the invitational with an 88 after opening with a 93 for a 181 to place 45th. Amanda Westrick and Kara Tschirhart finished just a stroke apart with Westrick compiling scores of 96-94 for a 190 to tie for 50th, while Tschirhart fired rounds of 95-96 for a 191 to end up 52nd. Westrick posted a pair of birdies on the final day on holes six and 15. Emilia Manntz rounded out the five for the Skyhawks tying for 55th with scores of 94 and 106 for a 200.

As a team, FLC averaged 4.03 on par-three, 5.28 on par-four and 6.03 on par-five. They also had 35 pars, eight birdies and one of only two eagles during the invitational. Individually, Vigil led the team in both par-three (3.50) and par-four (4.70), while Martinez led the way in par-five (5.50). Vigil sunk 10 pars and added three birdies, while Tschirhart had the eagle during the first round on Monday.

The women will be back in action this coming Monday and Tuesday when they will travel to Pueblo to compete in the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Invitational Mar. 25-26.
The men will have a few weeks off before returning to action on Apr. 7-9 when they will travel to Goodyear, Ariz., to compete in the Mustang Intercollegiate.
