Senior Darren Edwards Named 2021-22 RMAC Men's Academic Golfer of the Year

RMAC Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.
– The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference released the All-Academic teams for men's golf on Tuesday, with senior Darren Edwards earning the 2021-22 RMAC Men's Academic Golfer of the Year. Edwards, a member of the First Team All-Academic team as a junior and an Honor Roll representative as a sophomore, will earn his degree in Accounting this May with a 3.95 GPA.

"I am honored to be the recipient of this year's RMAC Men's Academic Golfer of the Year. This award is a testament to Fort Lewis College and its ability to provide students the opportunity to succeed both academically and athletically," said Edwards. "I would like to give special thanks to my coaches, specifically Coach Foltz for pushing me to be much more than a golfer and for instilling values in me that not only have a positive effect on my golf game but carry over into all aspects of life."

Edwards has had a dominant career as a Skyhawk, both academically and athletically. In a few short days he is slated to compete in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional Tournament for the second time in his career—placing 37th last season as the first Fort Lewis College men's golfer to compete at that level since 2012. He is coming off a ninth-place finish at the RMAC Championships two weeks ago and will look to continue his consistent output into this week's competition. Edwards will graduate as one of the best to garner the blue and gold while setting a precedent for other student-athletes to follow.

"I want to give a special thanks to the professors and athletic administration at Fort Lewis for helping me create a path for success and plan for the future. I would also like to thank all my teammates. This award would not be possible without the relationships that were built around me during my time as a Skyhawk, and any success I've had is a shared success with the people that work with me and push me each day.  Finally, I want to thank my family for being such an amazing support system, they are the best in the world and continue to make me a better person every day," acknowledged Edwards.

Edwards currently ranks 66th in the nation and third in the South Central region ahead of postseason play. He is averaging a 72.44 on the season and has helped the Skyhawks earn a No. 77 ranking in the nation. Competition at the South Central/West Regional Tournament begins on Thursday, May 5 and will conclude on Saturday, May 7 from the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo, Colorado.
