Women's cross country ranked 10th in USTFCCCA South Central Regional poll

9/30/2022 3:26:00 PM

NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the first time since 2018, the Fort Lewis College women's cross country team was ranked in the South Central Region, coming in 10th in the week two version of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) poll.

The USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Coaches' Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams' strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining a rank-order of squad potential.

In the South Central Region, fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opponents Adams State and Colorado School of Mines lead the way at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. The conference is well-represented throughout the remainder of the poll, earning spots at No. 3 (UCCS), No. 4 (Western Colorado), No. 5 (Colorado Christian), and No. 6 (CSU Pueblo).

The Skyhawks last competed at the MSU Denver Roadrunners Invite on Sept. 17, placing fourth in the field of 11 squads. Fort Lewis finished ahead of regionally ranked UCCS, and formerly ranked MSU Denver and Westminster College with a team average of 23:40.36. Highlighting the outing was 10 personal bests from Skyhawks runners, including a team-best 11th place finish from sophomore Katie Fankhouser (22:23.80).

Up next, Fort Lewis will be competing at home on October 7 at the Hillcrest Golf Course for the Tom Strandt Memorial race. The race will be a preview of what's to come when the Skyhawks host the RMAC Championships on the same course in November.
