Skyhawks set to host Yellow Jackets in first true home series on Aspen Field

DURANGO, Colo. – Battling snow and adverse weather has been the tale of the early spring, but softball is finally returning to the campus of Fort Lewis College as the Skyhawks (11-18, 9-13 RMAC) are slated to host Black Hills State University (4-20, 4-20 RMAC) for a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series on Aspen Field this Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets will be available at $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 13-17. Kids 12 and under are free as well as FLC students, faculty, and staff with their Skycard. Fans at home can follow the action for free on the RMAC Network with live statistics available as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Fort Lewis' last series was cut short due to snow and freezing temperatures, but not before the Skyhawks would down the Roadrunners at Metropolitan State University of Denver (24-9, 20-2 RMAC) for the first time since 1985.

Guided by Amiee Shanks (8-5) in the circle the Skyhawks dominated game one. Shanks allowed just three hits and base runners through the first four frames and held the Roadrunners to just a single run in the seventh inning. Highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs from Sloan Shotton and Alex Tenorio, Shanks held down MSUD en route to a 4-1 victory and both her eighth win and complete game of the season.

In game two the Roadrunners flipped the script in what was an offensive shootout. The Skyhawks managed to outhit the Roadrunners 10-9 across the contest without making a single error. While Fort Lewis struck first and ran out to a 4-1 lead through three innings, MSU Denver tacked on two in the fifth and six in the sixth to take a 9-4 advantage heading into the final frame. The Skyhawks were able to plate three in the seventh and managed to put the winning run on second base, but an untimely groundout would end the contest 9-7 in favor of MSU Denver forcing a 1-1 split on the weekend.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
Black Hills State enters the weekend on its sixth-straight road series with an 11-game losing streak. The Yellow Jackets last win was a 17-3 beatdown over Adams State University (7-24, 4-16 RMAC) in the series opener back on Mar. 11.

Headlining Black Hills State at the plate is sophomore Ashlynn Pauwels. The first and third basemen leads the roster with a .357 batting average paired with a .857 slugging percentage. Pauwels is third on the roster with 20 total hits but leads the Yellow Jackets with five doubles and seven home runs. As a unit BHSU is hitting .271 and boasts the second-lowest total team strikeouts in the conference with 117. Junior Shayla Tuschen is BHSU's leader in the circle owning a 5.28 earned run average, a 3-9 record, and a 3.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

THE HOMESTAND CONTINUES
Fort Lewis will take a short three days of rest before welcoming the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (9-22, 6-16 RMAC) for a four-game series on Thursday and Friday, Apr. 6-7.
