Cueva sisters’ power Skyhawks to Saturday split with Grizzlies

Izzy, Mia combine for four hits, five RBIs, two runs

DURANGO, Colo. – Vacaville, Calif., natives Izzy Cueva and Mia Cueva combined for four hits, two runs, and five runs-batted-in (RBI) on Saturday afternoon to secure a 5-3 victory for the Fort Lewis softball team (4-28, 3-19 RMAC) in game one before suffering an 11-2 loss in game two at the hands of Adams State University (7-25, 6-16 RMAC). The Skyhawks and Grizzlies will wrap up the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.

Game One – Fort Lewis 5, Adams State 3
Fort Lewis earned a hard-fought come-from-behind victory to open the four-game series, overcoming a three-run deficit behind a quality start from Hailie Mann (3-7). The redshirt senior tossed her eighth complete game of the year, scattering eight hits and one walk for a pair of earned runs while tying her season-high with six strikeouts after striking out the side in the final inning to secure her third victory of the year. Aryan Muñoz (2-8) took the loss with a final ledger of five hits, four earned runs, three walks, and two strikeouts.

Adams State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Makenzie Simon, her second of the year, in the top of the second before Ali Davis ripped an RBI single to right field to score another run in the top half of the third. Fort Lewis responded immediately to the deficit, scoring two runs of its own in the bottom of the third, first with a sacrifice fly to right field from Mia Cueva, and again with a perfectly executed suicide-squeeze bunt by Izzy Cueva.

Mia Cueva went on to single to left field and drive in the game-tying run in the home-half of the fifth before Izzy Cueva rifled a two-RBI triple to right-center to plate the go-ahead runs. The freshman duo combined for all five Skyhawks RBIs.

Game Two – Adams State 11, Fort Lewis 2
Adams State capitalized on early struggles in the circle in the first frame of the game, scoring four runs on five walks and one hit-by-pitch (HBP), as well as a bases-loaded two-RBI single back up the middle from Davis. Davis tacked on another run for a 5-0 lead in her next at-bat in the top of the second with a solo home run to left field.

The Grizzlies plated another pair of runs in the top of the fourth, using another walk and an RBI single through the left side to go up 7-0 and chase out Chloe Padilla (1-13), who took the loss with six earned runs on five hits, nine walks, and a hit batter (HBP) in 3.1 innings of work. Addison Gavigan (0-5) came in relief, surrendering three earned runs on seven hits, a walk, and one HBP through the final 3.2 innings of action.

Fort Lewis avoided the shutout with a pair of one-run frames in the home half of the fourth and sixth innings on the strength of RBI singles from Stella Romeo and Carmen Alexander.

ASU scored its final four runs on a pair of sacrifice flies from Davis, and another pair of RBI singles from Simon and Caylie Eiguren. Celie Page (2-3) went the distance for the second time of the season en route to her second win, holding the Skyhawks to two earned runs on five hits, one walk, and an HBP.
