Fort Lewis College volleyball hits the road for RMAC play, faces Cougars and Eagles

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball (4-6, 1-1 RMAC) is out of town this week for their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip against Colorado Christian University and Chadron State College.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis split its RMAC opening weekend at home against Westminster University and No. 12 Colorado Mesa University. In the four-set win over Westminster, the Skyhawks posted season highs with 60 kills and 10 total blocks on the night. The team recorded 70 digs, one shy of a season-best, while a scrappy Westminster squad came away with 73.

Junior Alexis Hobie led the team with 18 kills, followed by sophomore Ella Butler who pounded away 13 kills on 22 swings (.500). Butler was stout from the service line, too, totaling five service aces to pad her team lead. Junior Natalia Lambos coordinated a balanced offense and came away with 49 assists and 12 digs. Senior JJ Curry led the team with 14 digs to go along with 11 kills, followed by junior Sarah Wilkey who came away with 12 digs. Freshman Jordyn Romano led all players with five blocks.

The following night, Fort Lewis played extremely hard against No. 12 Colorado Mesa but fell in three sets. Fort Lewis recorded 32 kills on the night compared to 38 for Colorado Mesa. The Skyhawks held the edge at the service line with five aces versus three for the Mavericks.

Butler led the team with seven kills, followed by Lauren Shea and Curry who each had six. Freshman Jordan DeJesus played in the final set and had five kills on 10 swings. Wilkey led the way with 11 digs, followed by freshman Alina Nunez who contributed nine. Lambos recorded 28 assists and four block assists.

Scouting Colorado Christian University
The Cougars are 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference after losses to MSU Denver (0-3) and Mines (2-3) last week. As a team, CCU is hitting at a .218 clip compared to a .242 mark for their opponents. Alli Douglass is leading the team with 3.28 kills per set, followed by Abby Breeding who averages 2.71 per set. Izzy Jones coordinates the offense with 9.78 assists per set to go along with a team-best 18 service aces. On defense, Jessamyn Rose is leading the way at 2.64 digs per set.

Fort Lewis is 10-20 all-time against Colorado Christian and has lost three straight. Last year, the Skyhawks dropped a four-set match to the Cougars on the road. Shea led the team with 10 kills and Lambos recorded 39 assists.

Scouting Chadron State College
The Eagles enter the weekend with a 5-5 overall record and a 1-1 clip in conference play. The team topped Mines last week (3-2) before falling to No.8 MSU Denver (1-3) and No. 1 Wayne State (0-3). Chadron State hits at a .206 clip this season, slightly below the .219 mark for their opponents. Lexi Hurtado leads the team with 3.14 kills per set, followed by Mayson Fago at 2.75 per set. Kendyl Kirkwood is averaging 9.28 assists per set. Defensively, Alondra Hernandez paces the squad with 4.51 digs per set.

Fort Lewis is 13-12 all-time against Chadron State but fell in last season's meeting in a five-set thriller. Shea and Hobie led the team with 11 kills apiece, and Shea also added 19 digs for a quality double-double.

Around the RMAC
The conference has three teams ranked in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, released Monday. MSU Denver leads the way at No. 8, moving up one spot after sweeping conference play last week. Colorado Mesa follows at No. 11 with a 10-0 record, followed by No. 16 Regis University. Colorado School of Mines is receiving votes in the poll.

Fort Lewis ranks fifth in the conference in opponent-hitting percentage (.181). Freshman Jordyn Romano ranks 14th in the league in hitting percentage at .291. Sophomore Ella Butler leads the league with .83 aces per set. Junior Natalia Lambos is averaging 9.57 assists per set to rank fifth in the conference.

Inside the Numbers
The Skyhawks average 11.80 kills per set and 10.80 assists per set this season. The team had a season-high hitting percentage of .279 in at win over East Central. Boasting a deep lineup, Fort Lewis has eight players averaging at least one kill per set. Hobie is leading the way with 3.36 per set, followed by Butler's 2.35 kills per set. Lambos is averaging a career-best 9.57 assists per set to go along with 1.89 digs per set. Wilkey leads the way on defense with 3.43 digs per set. Freshman Logan Spragg and Romano lead the way at the net with .74 and .76 blocks per set, respectively.

Up Next
The Skyhawks are on the road again next week with a pair of pod matches against Adams State and New Mexico Highlands. The matches will both be played at New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. First, Fort Lewis will face Adams State on Friday, September 29 for a 6:00 p.m. match. The Skyhawks are 21-29 all-time against the Grizzlies, winning last year's meeting in four sets.

The team will then face New Mexico Highlands to close out the trip on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Fort Lewis is 29-24 all-time against New Mexico Highlands. Last year, the Skyhawks came away with two, four-set wins over the Cowgirls.
