Women finish 5th, men 6th at RMAC Championships

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College men's and women's cross country team placed sixth and fifth, respectively, while compiling five All-Conference honors at the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships at the Gene Torres Golf Course.

Men's 8k, 6th Place (168 points)
The Skyhawks were led by junior Elijah Smith who picked up his second career Second Team All-Conference honor with a 17th-place finish. Smith held an average pace of 4:59 through 8k for an overall time of 24:44.38. He averaged 4:41 minutes per mile through the first 2,200m and tapered off slightly through the 4,400m and 6,600m splits before cranking it up through the finish line. Junior Caden Resendez followed with his second-straight Second Team All-Conference honor after placing 20th. Resendez ran for a time of 24:50.29 and averaged an even 5:00 minutes per mile time. The junior started similarly to his counterpart, Smith, and turned on the jets in the final 1,400m.

Next, junior Cebastian Marquez crossed the line in 32nd place with a time of 25:16.05—good for a season-best and personal best. Fort Lewis' fourth finisher was sophomore Cesar Diaz, racing in his first RMAC Championship and placing 54th with a personal best time of 26:02.95. Rounding out the top five was junior Skyler McIntyre with a 58th-place time of 26:08.38. Additional finishers for the men included junior Brady Burrough (62nd, 26:10.49), senior Conner Dosmann (83rd, 27:04.40), freshman Andres Cura (90th, 27:21.75), and junior Malakai Hanson (95th, 27:30.0).

No. 2 Colorado School of Mines took home the team title, followed by No. 6 Adams State. Romain Legendre of Adams State was the individual winner with a time of 23:33.78.

Women's 6k, 5th Place (129 points)
The women's team was led by junior Hannah Hartwell, an outdoor track First Team All-American, who placed fifth en route to First Team All-Conference nods. Hartwell notched a 5:19 minute per mile pace through the first 2,200m and held that pace through the final mile for a time of 19:47.87. Backing her up was sophomore Linda Weigang who placed 10th to earn First Team All-Conference recognition—the second cross country All-RMAC honor of her young career. After a strong opening split, the sophomore slowed with the pack at the 4,400m split before picking it up to finish in 20:31.33. Junior Althea Griffith was the final All-Conference finisher, earning Second Team nods after placing 27th. Her time of 21:24.23 featured a 5:45 minute per mile average.

Sophomore Tessa Stadler was the fourth finisher for the Skyhawks, crossing the line in 30th place with a time of 21:24.23. Rounding out the scoring five was junior Marisol Castilleja who ran a time of 22:43.87 to place 64th. Additional finishers for the women included junior Skyler Charlie (79th, 23:36.25), junior Claire Peterson (83rd, 23:46.24), junior Mikenna Hoffman (86th, 23:53.21), and junior Cadence Corby (89th, 24:01.06).

No. 1 Adams State took home the team title, followed by No. 3 CSU Pueblo. Ava O'Connor of Adams State was the individual winner with a time of 19:28.25.

Up Next
Fort Lewis will look ahead to the NCAA South Central Regional in two weeks. The teams will travel to Denver for a Saturday, November 9 race day at Washington Park.
