Mavericks hot-slugging downs Skyhawks in succession

BLOOMFIELD, N.M. – Unable to halt a surging Mavericks offense, the Fort Lewis softball team (2-9, 0-2 RMAC) dropped both games to Colorado Mesa (4-4, 2-0 RMAC) 5-2 and 13-3 on the opening day of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on a beautiful day at Bloomfield High School.

Amiee Shanks (2-4) registered 8.1 innings across the two games after throwing a complete game to open the morning and coming in on relief for the final four outs of game two. Shanks struck out three Mavs while walking four.

Alex Tenorio, Briana Jorgensen, and Kayla Stone all tallied two hits across both games while Stone led all Skyhawks on the day with two runs batted in thanks to her first home run of the season: a towering shot to left field that cleared the fence with plenty of room to spare. Catheryn Rodman also notched her first long ball of the season with a rocket to dead center.

Natalie Rodman later forced an infield error in the bottom of the fourth inning to push across the first run of the contest, however, Fort Lewis would be unable to plate the remaining two runners left on base the following innings.

Jorgensen doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning to plate Catheryn Rodman who reached on an error by the Mavs first basemen. Colorado Mesa, however, would not be denied as Ally Distler sent a towering shot to centerfield to reextend the lead heading into the final frame.

Game Two – Colorado Mesa 13, Fort Lewis 3
The Mavericks offense, halted by a brief intermission between games, showed no signs of slowing down heading into game two of the afternoon on a Myah Arrieta leadoff home run. An error later in the inning allowed the Mavs to push across a second run in the bottom of the first, and Catheryn Rodman answered herself in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to center field.

Between the third and fourth innings, Colorado Mesa put up another 11 runs on a combined eight hits and one error. While Fort Lewis was able to score another pair in the bottom of the third on Stone's home run, the Skyhawks would only muster up one hit across the final six outs.
