Mavericks take series from Skyhawks

BLOOMFIELD, N.M. – Despite holding the edge in total hits in both contests, Fort Lewis (2-11, 0-4 RMAC) was unable to drive in its 14 stranded runners across the afternoon which ultimately proved the difference against a gritty Colorado Mesa (6-4, 4-0 RMAC) squad that downed the Skyhawks 3-2 and 9-1 to capture the series on balmy Sunday afternoon down at Bloomfield High School.

Amiee Shanks (2-5), for the third consecutive doubleheader, toed the rubber for the Skyhawks in both contests. Shanks totaled 8.0 innings on the day while allowing four earned runs on only two hits and two walks. Shanks also struck out two.

Colorado Mesa's Iliana Mendoza led all hitters with four hits on the afternoon including a 3-3 performance alongside Makayla Westmoreland in game two. Cara Daugherty had the only three-hit afternoon for the blue and gold while also adding a run scored, a run batted in, and a walk.

Game One – Colorado Mesa 3, Fort Lewis 2
Shanks took the circle opposite Hannah Sattler (0-1) in game one and the duo provided strong performances off the rubber. Shanks threw her seventh complete game of the season, giving up three earned runs and two hits in the process while walking and fanning a pair. Sattler managed just 4.0 innings of five-hit, two-earned run work before Preslee Christian (2-2) came in to claim the victory on 3.0 innings of one-hit relief pitching.

The Mavericks struck first in the opening frame after Myah Arrieta drew a lead-off walk, stole second, moved to third on an infield ground ball, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ally Distler to deep right field.

Fort Lewis' defense took over and held CMU scoreless through five of the final six innings. Shanks ultimately carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before it was broken up on a bunt lead-off single from Mendoza. The final blow from the Mavs then came in the form of a two-run home run off the bat of Distler with two outs just moments after Mendoza reached base.

Game Two – Colorado Mesa 9, Fort Lewis 1
Marisa Nehm (2-0) led the Mavericks' charge from the circle in game two. The five-foot-eight sophomore product from Grand Junction, Colo., scattered 10 hits across the afternoon to limit the Skyhawks to only a single run in the bottom of the sixth and final inning of play. Nehm hit two batters but otherwise did not surrender any walks.

The Skyhawks managed to threaten with runners on base in four of its six innings at the plate but could only reach third base or score on three separate occasions. In addition, Fort Lewis grounded into three double plays in the contest.

Kayla Stone, Catheryn Rodman, and Daugherty combined for six of FLC's 10 total hits.
