Skyhawks drop a pair to No. 11 Cougars

Fort Lewis drops 13th straight game to Colorado Christian

Durango, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team dropped to 2-13 on the season and 0-6 in conference play on Saturday after dropping a pair of games to No. 11-ranked Colorado Christian by scores of 10-3 and 12-1 up on Aspen Field.

The Cougars advance to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in league play after rifling off 26 hits across the afternoon while holding Fort Lewis to just four runs on 15 combined hits. Center fielder Sami Edwards had quite the afternoon as the graduate student went 6-8 at the plate with five runs scored and one run batted in with a double and a triple as well.

Ashley Burriel provided the only three-hit outing for the Skyhawks while Alex Tenorio and Kayla Stone notched two hits apiece.

Game One – No. 11 Colorado Christian 10, Fort Lewis 3
Amiee Shanks (2-6) went the distance against Emma Duncan (8-0) in game one. Shanks surrendered 10 runs, eight of which were earned, on 13 hits while striking out one and walking a pair. Duncan on the other hand scattered six hits across her 7.0 innings of work for three earned runs.

Stone propelled Fort Lewis to an early advantage with a two-out, two-run home run to right center field. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Cougars, after plating just a single run in the second inning on a ground ball, caught fire for five runs in the third inning and another four in the fourth. The Skyhawks managed one final run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded single from Tenorio.

Game Two – No. 11 Colorado Christian 12, Fort Lewis 1
Fort Lewis built off of its late momentum in game one, improving to and scattering nine hits across the second game, however, the only score of the game came on a hard-hit grounder off the bat of Faith Sgro that forced an error out of the Cougars' third basemen to plate Cara Daugherty.

Kaila Eastburn (5-0) cruised to her fifth consecutive victory in the circle all while not surrendering an earned run and picking herself up with a 2-5 afternoon at the plate with a run scored and a double.

Similar to game one, Colorado Christian was held scoreless through four frames but exploded for four runs in the third and three runs in the fifth before slamming the door shut with a five-run seventh inning to close it out.

Comfort of Home
Fort Lewis has another doubleheader against the top-ranked Cougars scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. up on Aspen Field.
