Skyhawks come up empty against New Mexico foes

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College softball team (1-3) struggled on day two of the South Central Softball Tournament resulting in 5-4 and 8-0 defeats to Western New Mexico (2-1) and Eastern New Mexico (3-0), respectively, Saturday afternoon at the Los Lunas Sports Complex.

Kayla Stone and Stacia Raley provided the only two-hit afternoons for the blue and gold, with Stone recording both hits against the Mustangs while Raley found a hit in each contest, most notably to break the no-hitter by the Greyhounds in game two.

Game One – Western New Mexico 5, Fort Lewis 4
The Skyhawks jumped on the Mustangs early, tallying a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a sacrifice fly from Catheryn Rodman was later followed up by a base-hit single from Stone. The shutout was short-lived, however, as WNMU pushed a run across in the second inning on a single from Madeline Bleak.

Fort Lewis tacked on two more runs in the third and fifth innings on singles off the bats of Raley and Ashley Burriel. Momentum began to swing in the bottom of the fifth as Western New Mexico's Jenna Peters belted a double to left field to drive in a pair and cut the deficit to one.

The Mustangs held on and limited the Skyhawks to just a single across its next six outs before heading into the bottom of the seventh with FLC in front by one. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, an error allowed WNMU to swipe home, and an infield hit found just enough room up the first-base line to allow the walk-off run to cross the plate. Freshman Madison Kloepper (1-0) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits through 4.2 innings of relief.

Game Two – Eastern New Mexico 8, Fort Lewis 0
Eastern New Mexico jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs on a single back through the middle from Alondra Vasquez. Fort Lewis was threatening to match the Greyhounds' lead with runners on first and second in the bottom half of the opening frame, but a foul ball back to the catcher ended the inning.

After a three-up, three-down second inning for both sides, the Greyhounds proceeded to rack up four runs in the third and another two in the fourth on four hits including a pair of triples.

Raley singled back up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to break up the no-hitter after the Greyhounds turned to Maggie Smith (0-0) out of the bullpen.

ENMU's Jordan Rivera (1-0) earned the win after throwing four innings of no-hit softball while walking two and striking out three.

Tournament Finale on Deck
The Skyhawks are scheduled to close out the South Central Softball Tournament with a 12:30 p.m. bout against fourth-ranked West Texas A&M (3-0) on field two at the Los Lunas Sports Complex tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 4. The game was originally scheduled for 11:30 a.m. but was moved back an hour out of concerns for the weather.
