Skyhawks overpower Grizzlies at the plate, earn first conference series win of the year

Fort Lewis wins first conference series of 2024

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Skyhawks offense put on quite a show Saturday afternoon at the ASU Softball Field as Fort Lewis slugged its way to 25 total hits across just 12 total innings to earn a pair of 9-1 and 18-10 victories over Adams State and pick up its first conference series win over the year, three games to one.

Fort Lewis rises to 5-16 overall and 3-9 in conference play while dropping Adams State to 3-19 overall and 1-11 in RMAC contests.

Kayla Stone was record-breaking today as the Skyhawks' second basemen went off for four hits in seven at-bats and slugging her way to three doubles, six runs scored, and five runs batted in (RBI). Alex Tenorio and Faith Sgro aided Stone with four hits each, and Briana Jorgensen led all players on the day with six total RBIs on four hits as well.

Game One (6 Inn.) – Fort Lewis 9, Adams State 1
Fort Lewis came prepared to play on day two as they racked up nine runs on nine combined hits to earn its second rune-rule victory of the season. Sgro led the charge with three hits in four at-bats while also racking up three runs batted in (RBI) identical to Jorgensen and Tenorio who each added two hits in three at-bats to round the Skyhawks with double-digit hits.

While a Tenorio single in the top of the second scored the first run of the ball game, it was a consistent offensive push that added two runs each in the fourth on a Tenorio double, two runs in the fifth on a single from Jorgensen and a fielder's choice from Sgro, and a four-run sixth inning that saw two scores each on a Jorgensen single and a Sgro triple.

In the circle, junior Amiee Shanks (4-7) made the opening-game start and threw all six innings while scattering four hits and surrendering a single earned run. Shanks also struck out three and did not give up any walks. Adam State's Danielle Hood (1-9) was credited the loss after 5.1 innings of work that saw FLC plate nine runs, five of which were earned. Hood also walked three and hit four batters.

Game Two (6 Inn.) – Fort Lewis 18, Adams State 10
The Skyhawks carried their bats into game two, but Adams State brought theirs back as well and both sides combined for 28 total runs on 30 total hits in only six innings before Fort Lewis cut down the Grizzlies for its second run-rule victory of the afternoon and third of the season.

Stone was seeing beach balls at the plate as the senior from Salinas, Calif., tied a program record with three doubles in her five at-bats while also producing five RBIs and scoring another five runs herself; tying the third-most runs scored in a single game. Cara Daugherty was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored while Tenorio also supplied three hits, four runs, and an RBI in her four at-bats.

Hailie Mann (1-9) earned her first win of the season in the circle after throwing 5.1 innings and striking out five against one walk and one hit batter. Ellie Heiser (0-3) took the loss for Adams State after giving up 10 earned runs on 13 hits in just 1.1 innings of work.
