Sgro’s walk-off single forces day one split with Regis

Fort Lewis remains in line to capture series on Saturday

DURANGO, Colo. – A beautiful day up on Aspen Field was highlighted by a walk-off single rifled off the bat of Faith Sgro who secured her Skyhawks softball squad (6-17, 4-10 RMAC) a 2-1 extra-innings victory over Regis (13-11, 9-5 RMAC) before the Rangers stormed back to down Fort Lewis 14-3 in game two.

Alex Tenorio had quite the afternoon for the blue and gold as the junior from Albuquerque, N.M., went 4-7 at the plate for two runs scored and a run batted in. Five other Skyhawks recorded two hits on the day, but none registered multi-hit games besides Ashley Burriel who went 2-4 in game one.

Game One (8 Inn.) – Fort Lewis 2, Regis 1
Amiee Shanks (5-7) took the circle against Regis' Kylie Harpman (8-4), and the duo kicked off the four-game series with a phenomenal pitcher's duel that went 0-0 through the first five innings with nine total hits scattered but no more than a single by either squad in each frame.

In the top of the fifth, Shanks forced back-to-back ground outs before Morgan Norris reached base on a single to center field. Sydney Young drew a walk after Kaden Wyatt came in to pinch-run for Norris, putting runners on first and second for Rachel Barriga, who singled to left field and broke the seal for a 1-0 Rangers lead.

Alejandra Medina led off the seventh with a pinch-hit double before a pop-up and a fly-ball put Fort Lewis down to its final out. Down to a full count and a strike away from a loss, Hannah Rutherford instead connected on a base hit down the left-field line to bring in Medina from second and tie the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, consecutive singles from Catheryn Rodman and Natalie Rodman had the Skyhawks threatening with one out. Briana Jorgensen loaded the bases after reaching on a fielder's choice that also saw Catheryn Rodman evade the tag from the Regis shortstop. With a 1-1 count, Sgro called game and punched a single through the right side that scored Rodman.

Game Two (5 Inn.) – Regis 14, Fort Lewis 3
Regis, after building momentum with seven hits in game one, exploded for 16 hits in the second game and scored at least one run in each of its five innings at the plate. After RU managed to plate a single run in the first and second innings, Fort Lewis responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first and two runs in the second on singles from Tenorio and Kayla Stone to take the one-run lead, 3-2.

The Rangers' Vanessa Candito (1-2), who entered in on relief with two outs in the second inning, proceeded to cruise to her first win of the year allowing two hits and walking another while striking out four all in just 47 total pitches. On the offensive side, RU put up three runs in the third, four in the fourth, and five in the fifth all while Fort Lewis could only muster two hits in the third inning before registering just a walk down the stretch.
