Skyhawks drop pair to Orediggers

Fort Lewis falls behind 0-2 in series

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team, caged by dominant pitching that struck out 16 Skyhawks on the afternoon, dropped both of its series-opening games 8-0 and 6-4 to Colorado School of Mines Friday afternoon at Joe Coors, Jr. Softball Field. FLC will look to bounce back and fight to even the series tomorrow morning.

The Skyhawks fall to 7-20 overall and 5-13 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Mines rises to an even 14-14 overall and 10-10 in league play.

Alex Tenorio and Hannah Rutherford each tallied a single hit in each game while Kayla Stone was the only Skyhawk to rack up three hits on the afternoon. In addition, Cara Daugherty posted two hits in game two to match Stone with the only other multi-game of the day.

Game One – Mines 8, Fort Lewis 0
Mines rolled offensively behind graduate student Sadriena Rodriguez (7-5) who dominated from inside the circle scattering four hits and two walks across the afternoon while finishing one strikeout away from her season high with nine on the day.

At the plate, Stone singled twice to provide two of Fort Lewis' four total hits while Tenorio added a triple and Rutherford a single of her own. Four separate Orediggers notched two hits in the contest, but none did more damage than Kellan Ton who scored twice, recorded two runs batted in, and stole a base all in her 2-4 performance at the dish.

Colorado School of Mines needed just five outs to force the run-rule after posting a pair of crooked four-run innings in the bottom of the third sixth frames. In total, Mines picked up nine of its 10 total hits through the third and sixth innings while finding a single in the bottom of the second inning as well. Amiee Shanks (5-9) was dealt the loss after surrendering eight runs, six of which were earned, while striking out a pair and walking one.

Game Two – Mines 6, Fort Lewis 4
The Orediggers didn't skip a beat heading into game two of the afternoon as the hometown squad slowly and steadily racked up at least one run in four of its six trips to the plate. The Skyhawks, on the other hand, finally jumped on the board in the fifth inning as Cali Niccum swiped home after a muffed throw by the Orediggers second baseman on a steal by Tenorio.

In the top of the seventh, Fort Lewis rallied around a lead-off walk to later load the bases and score a pair of runs on a single to right field from Stone. A wild pitch brought another run home moments later, and Daugherty kept the momentum going with a sacrifice fly to plate what would be the Skyhawks final run of the game.

While Allison Westbrook (4-2) allowed three of the four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of relief, it was Kat Miller (3-3) who picked up the win after toeing the rubber for 5.0 innings of work and scattering one run on five hits while striking out seven.
