Fort Lewis suffers series sweep to Colorado School of Mines

Orediggers win five straight over Skyhawks

GOLDEN, Colo. – 36 runners left of base was the tale of the weekend as the Fort Lewis softball team, who struck out a combined 25 times, could not produce enough offense to hang with Colorado School of Mines (16-14, 12-10 RMAC) resulting in a pair of 8-6 and 6-2 losses and a series sweep to the Orediggers to drop the Skyhawks to 7-22 overall and 5-15 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play through the mid-way point of its conference schedule.

All told the Skyhawks were out-hit 43-30 over the weekend while also striking out twice as much as the Orediggers (25-12). Through the final two games, it was Alex Tenorio and Ashley Burriel who combined for four of the six runs batted in and four of the eight runs scored for Fort Lewis. Tenorio capped off the day 3-6 at the plate with three doubles, four runs scored and two walks while Burriel went 3-7 with four RBIs.

Game One – Mines 8, Fort Lewis 6
Despite getting off to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Burriel to bring in Tenorio, who doubled to lead off the day and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Fort Lewis was unable to slow down Colorado School of Mines at the plate.

Sadriena Rodriguez (8-5) led CSM to another win in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while once again dominating Fort Lewis hitters with eight strikeouts. On the offensive side, the Orediggers plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning, three more in the bottom of the fifth, and another pair of insurance runs in the sixth all on nine of CSM's 12 total hits alongside two errors by FLC.

The Skyhawks plated another run in the top of the fifth on yet another combination of a Burriel single and Tenorio's second double of the game with one out to open the inning. In the top of the seventh, Fort Lewis rallied behind a double from Catheryn Rodman and four wild pitches from Allison Westbrook (4-2) who surrendered four earned runs on no hits, four walks, and the four wild pitches before the Orediggers turned to Kat Miller (4-3) who picked up her first save of the season after allowing one hit before forcing the final out of the game.

Game Two – Mines 6, Fort Lewis 2
Fort Lewis was the first to score for the second-straight game earning a 1-0 advantage on a flash of déjà vu as Burriel forced a fielder's choice to allow Tenorio, who doubled for the third time in the series at the top of the frame, to come around score.

Kat Miller (4-3), who went the first 5.0 innings of the game, allowed just the single run on eight scattered hits while also walking two and hitting another against a single strikeout. Rodriguez, who tossed 2.0 innings of relief, allowed the second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning on a double from Burriel yet again to score none other than Tenorio.

The Orediggers, held scoreless on five hits through the first three innings, finally broke through with two outs in the fourth inning to score three runs on four singles and a walk. CSM tacked on another two runs in the lower half of the fifth on a single from Kellan Ton and a final run in the sixth on a single off the bat of Kayleigh Krueger.

Notable
