Offensive surge keys series split with Regis

Fort Lewis to continue eight-game home stand next weekend

DURANGO, Colo. – A slow start to the day allowed Regis to cruise to a 6-1 win in game one, but the Fort Lewis softball team quickly rallied between games and came out with an offensive vengeance in game two to out-last the Rangers 7-6 and force a 2-2 split of the two squad's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.

Fort Lewis climbs to 7-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play while Regis drops to 14-12 and 10-6 in conference games.

Ashley Burriel and Alex Tenorio led the charge with a pair of four-hit afternoons while Hannah Rutherford notched three hits of her own through six at-bats. Burriel was the only Skyhawk to record three runs batted in while Rutherford and Cara Daugherty drove in two each and Tenorio a single run as well.

Game One – Regis 6, Fort Lewis 1
Amiee Shanks (5-8) and Kylie Harpman (9-4) squared off in the circle once again to open the day, but this time Regis came prepared at the plate. While Harpman scattered six hits across her complete-game performance and allowed just one earned run in the seventh inning, Shanks on the other hand, allowed 12 hits for six earned runs while walking three batters and hitting another two.

Burriel notched a 2-3 performance at the dish, however, only four other Skyhawks recorded a single hit each. In total, the Skyhawks stranded 10 runners throughout the contest and only recorded two or more hits in the seventh frame.

Four individual Rangers recorded a multi-hit game spearheaded by Miia Campos who went 3-4 with a run scored while Rachel Barriga and Abby Larson each recorded a pair of RBIs.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 7, Regis 6
Despite being outhit by the Rangers 12-9 in game two, it was Fort Lewis who found the edge with an early run which stood as the difference maker. In the bottom of the first, the Skyhawks decided to play small ball as Rutherford laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Tenorio into scoring position after she reached base with a lead-off single. The following at-bat, Burriel singled to right center field and FLC got on the board 1-0.

Hailie Mann (2-10) proceeded to go the distance for her second win of the season as she allowed six runs, four of which were earned while walking two and striking out a season-high seven Rangers. Vanessa Candito (1-2) started in the circle for RU before surrendering five runs on five hits through only 3.1 innings of work. Katherine Raper (0-0) came in on relief but was quickly chased out before she could record an out after giving up two runs on two hits. Alexis Kemp (2-2) was the final Regis pitcher to toe the rubber and ultimately allowed just two hits in the final two frames.

Both sides rifled off two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth. For the Skyhawks, it was a single down the left field line in the third that plated a pair to kick-start the scoring run. Later in the fourth, a Tenorio single plated the first run of the inning while a Rutherford double scored two more, and a Burriel a single to round out the four-run inning.
