Softball takes two from Black Hills State on Saturday

Skyhawks in the hunt for first series sweep

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Fort Lewis softball got off to an excellent start in its four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon as the Skyhawks rallied behind 17 hits and a complete-game shutout from Amiee Shanks to down Black Hills State 2-0 and 7-4 up at Yellow Jacket Field.

The Skyhawks climb to 12-27 overall and 10-20 in league contests while the Yellow Jackets drop to 12-25 and 11-21 in conference matchups. BHSU still leads FLC in the conference standings by a single game.

Shanks (6-14) was the defensive standout of the afternoon as the junior from Tucson, Ariz., threw her 20th complete game of the season, and now owns the second-most in all of DII this season, while also picking up her first shutout of the year and the third for FLC in as many weeks.

Offensively, Cali Niccum was the only player across both lineups to pick up four hits on the afternoon in her six at-bats. Kayla Stone led all Skyhawks with three runs batted in with Niccum and Hannah Rutherford right on her heels with two each. Kayla Lee picked up a team-high three hits for the Yellow Jackets followed by Gianna Haley and Audrey Fouras who added two apiece.

Game One – Fort Lewis 2, Black Hills State 0
The series kicked off with a pitcher's dual through and through as Shanks toed the rubber opposite Laci Peskey (5-11) and the pair proceeded to exchange complete-game outings while giving up eight combined hits.

While Shanks struck out three and walked two, Peskey struck out a game-high five batters and walked one but gave up the only pair of earned runs in the contest.

Just three hits were collected through the first five innings of play before Fort Lewis finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Alex Tenorio and Rutherford posted back-to-back singles with one out, and after a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Burriel moved the runners to second and third base, Stone stepped to the plate and belted a double down the left field line to plate the go-ahead runs with ease.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 7, Black Hills State 4
The offense ramped up in game two as the Skyhawks combined for 12 hits matching the second-most in a game this season. On the flip side, Hailie Mann (6-13) went the distance for the 12th time this season and surrendered four runs, only two earned, while scattering 10 hits, two strikeouts, and a walk.

Niccum was a perfect 3-3 at the plate in the game and matched Rutherford, who went 2-4, with a game-high two runs batted in each. Rutherford, Stone, and Cara Daugherty each picked up two hits in the game.

While Black Hills State scored first with a two-run frame in the bottom of the second, Fort Lewis responded promptly scoring three runs in the third and fifth innings and another in the fourth on RBI hits from Daugherty, Niccum, Stone, Rutherford, and a sacrifice fly from Tenorio.

BHSU's Malaya Coleman (2-4) was credited the loss after giving up three earned runs on seven hits in her 2.2 innings of work. Shayla Tuschen (5-10) and Laci Peskey (5-11) combined for four earned runs and five hits through their 2.0 and 2.1 innings of relief, respectively.
