Skyhawks soar offensively, sweep Yellow Jackets

Fort Lewis earns first series sweep of the season

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Fort Lewis softball extended its winning streak to five straight games Sunday afternoon in the Mount Rushmore State as the Skyhawks handled Black Hills State 4-3 in game one and 11-0 in game two, capturing the program's first series sweep of the season.

The Skyhawks, now riding its longest winning streak of the season, stand at 14-27 overall, 12-20 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action, and seventh in the league standings to reside one spot out of the RMAC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets take their ninth consecutive loss and fall to 12-27 and 11-23 in conference play.

Fort Lewis combined for 27 hits, the most in a doubleheader this season, while also racking up the second-most runs (15) and runs batted in (15) in a doubleheader as well. Kayla Stone was an immaculate 8-8 at the plate recording two home runs, a double, and a triple for four runs and six RBIs to account for 10 of FLC's 15 total runs on the afternoon.

Audrey Fouras led the charge for Black Hills State with a 4-6 afternoon while Kayla Lee and Lily Simmons were the only additional Yellow Jackets to record a hit in both contests.

Game One – Fort Lewis 4, Black Hills State 3
Amiee Shanks (7-14) battled Laci Peskey (5-12) in the circle for a second straight day and it was Shanks who emerged the victor once again. Despite giving up 11 hits, Shanks buckled down and allowed only three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out four and not surrendering a walk.

Stone was the driving force behind the win, accounting for two of the four runs scored and three RBIs thanks to a pair of solo home runs in the second and sixth innings and the go-ahead RBI single to plate Alex Tenorio, who reached on an error to open the inning, with two outs in the top of the seventh. Briana Jorgensen also provided a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.

Black Hills State forced the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run from Audrey Fouras to follow up Stone's second-inning blast. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Ashlynn Pauwels belted an RBI double to bring BHSU within one, and an error with two down brought in the game-tying run later in the inning.

Peskey was dealt her second loss at the hands of the Skyhawks surrendering three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three without a hit batter or walk given.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 11, Black Hills State 1
For the second consecutive day, Fort Lewis exploded offensively in the afternoon clash for 17 total hits, the most in a single game this season to cap off the Skyhawks' fourth run-rule victory of the year.

While Stone led the charge with a game-high four hits, Catheryn Rodman and Tenorio each supplied three hits, and Hannah Rutherford and Cali Niccum another pair of hits as well. In addition, nine different Skyhawks scored runs in the contest, and seven recorded at least one RBI. Fort Lewis also picked up five extra-base hits including four doubles, the third-most in a game this year.

The Skyhawks plated just a single run in the first and second innings on RBI singles from Stone and Tenorio but did a plethora of damage in the third frame. Fort Lewis rifled off five consecutive hits for four runs before recording an out, then wrapped up the inning with nine runs on nine hits while leaving one runner stranded.

Hailie Mann (7-13) earned the win in the circle against BHSU's Shayla Tuschen (5-11) after throwing her 14th complete game of the season and allowing one unearned run on six hits, five strikeouts, and no walks or hit batters.

Quotable
"I'm proud of how the girls competed this weekend, it was a fun one. They competed all game long for four straight games and never laid down or let up when things didn't go their way on the field. We were able to pick up a few gritty wins and then really opened things up to end the trip. Overall, I'm proud of our combined performance this weekend." – Head Coach Paige Adair
