Senior Day victory keys series win over Cowgirls

Fort Lewis captures third series of the season

DURANGO, Colo. –  A sixth-inning sacrifice fly from Alejandra Medina paired with a bases-loaded inning-ending double-play was the difference maker as the Fort Lewis softball team emerged with a 4-3 win in game one before dropping game two 6-2 to New Mexico Highlands resulting in a 3-1 series win for the Skyhawks in their final home set of the 2024 season.

The split lands the Skyhawks at 17-28 overall and 15-21 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action while the Cowgirls stand at 14-29 overall and 10-28 in league play.

Amiee Shanks (9-14) made two appearances in the circle on the afternoon for 10.1 innings of work including a complete-game win in game one to capture her 36th career victory and move into a tie for the second-most victories in program history alongside Kassie Haubert (2009-14). Shanks now trails only Victoria Johnson's (2013-16) career mark of 40.

Cara Daugherty provided the lone three-hit afternoon for the Skyhawks alongside Natalie Rodman and Ashley Burriel who added the only other multi-hit afternoons. Hannah Rutherford, in her final doubleheader on Aspen Field, also supplied her fourth career home run with a solo shot in game one. Kayla Stone, on the other hand, went a remarkable 1-1 on the day with two runs scored and six walks drawn.

Shaylene Saladin led all hitters on the day with a 4-8 performance including two runs scored and one run batted in with a double to her name as well. Heaven Medina, Jazmyn Griego, Karla Banegas, and Alessandra De La Trinidad each had multi-hit performances as well.

Game One – Fort Lewis 4, New Mexico Highlands 3
Carrying momentum from a day one sweep, the Skyhawks jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two-RBI single off the bat of Briana Jorgensen.

After a leadoff double from Banegas opened the top of the third for NMHU, the Cowgirls rallied behind her with a pair of singles to plate their first run of the day. Later in the inning with two outs, a single from Medina drove in the tying run before an error the following at-bat allowed the go-ahead run to score and put the visitors ahead, 3-2.

In the fifth, Fort Lewis finally found its game-tying run after Rutherford, with a full count, belted a solo homer to left field in her eighth pitch of the at-bat. Medina then provided the go-ahead run and a 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Then in the seventh, New Mexico Highlands strung together back-to-back-to-back singles with one out to load the bases before Shanks pitched her way into a 6-2-3 double play to end the game.

While Shanks picked up her ninth win of the season on her 23rd complete game, Arianna Ramirez (4-13) was dealt the loss with a final line of 6.0 innings pitched, seven hits, four earned runs, three walks, and two strikeouts.

Game Two – New Mexico Highlands 6, Fort Lewis 2
New Mexico Highlands finally caught fire offensively in the final game of the series despite both sides totaling five hits and a pair of errors. In the top of the third, the Cowgirls racked up three runs on the back of a lead-off solo homer from Carlee Gonzales before Gabrielle Varela supplied an RBI double and Banegas a sacrifice fly.

The Cowgirls' hot streak continued when Medina notched a two-run home run in the top of the third after a leadoff double from Saladin. Then in the top of the fourth, NMHU captured its final insurance run of the day with another solo homer from Banegas with two outs.

After stranding six runners on the base paths through the first five innings, the Skyhawks finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Natalie Rodman singled to left-center field with one out to bring in the first run of the contest before Daugherty came around to score on a wild pitch with two outs later in the inning.

Hailie Mann (8-14) was given the loss after being chased out following 3.2 innings of five-hit work that resulted in five earned runs. Shanks then closed out the game holding NMHU hit-less through the final 3.1 innings and gave up just one walk while striking out another.
