Niccum’s go-ahead single snaps Roadrunners win streak; Skyhawks split day one

Fort Lewis to contend for series tomorrow morning

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball made its triumphant return to Aspen Field after nearly a full calendar month and the Skyhawks made full use of the home dirt to force a split on day one of its four-game series against conference-leading MSU Denver by dropping game one 9-2 and rallying behind Hailie Mann's outstanding performance in the circle to take game two 3-1 and snap the Roadrunners' nine-game win streak.

The Skyhawks move to 9-26 on the year and 7-19 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Roadrunners, who took its third conference loss of the season, stand at 34-8 and 27-3 in league play.

It was a tale of two games this afternoon despite Fort Lewis' 19 runners left on base across both contests. MSU Denver on the other hand, stranded just 13 while racking up 15 hits in the opening game before scattering only six hits in the matinee.

Hannah Rutherford notched a three-hit afternoon while Kayla Stone, Ashley Burriel, and Catheryn Rodman provided the only additional multi-hit outings.

MSUD's Shelby Robb and Miah Hartvigsen, who are now tied for the eighth-best batting average (.500) across the NCAA DII landscape, led the Roadrunners with a pair of four-hit afternoons. Robb added two runs scored and four runs batted in while Hartvigsen supplied another two runs and one RBI.

Game One – MSU Denver 9, Fort Lewis 2
The Roadrunners, who have received votes on and sit just outside of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25, exploded early to take a commanding 8-0 lead by the top half of the third inning. Hartvigsen got the party started with a solo home run in the top of the second inning before her teammates went off for four singles, three doubles, and a three-run homer in the top of the third frame to put themselves up 8-0 and in line for the run-rule victory.

Fort Lewis dug in, however, and got on the board with an RBI single from Stone in the bottom of the third frame and added another run on a Stone double in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to seven. However, the Skyhawks could only manage a single in second, sixth, and seventh innings.

Jenna Medhus (12-0) cruised through her fourth complete game of the season to remain unbeaten in the circle. The sophomore surrendered the two earned runs on six hits, three walks, and a hit batter while striking out six.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 3, MSU Denver 1
Once again MSU Denver was the first to strike as the Roadrunners scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning after an error following a single placed a runner on third base for Robb to single home the following at-bat.

The Roadrunners found themselves threatening in the third, fifth, and sixth innings while twice reaching a runner to third base but could not overcome flying out for 15 of its 21 total outs.

Alex Tenorio tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field after Natalie Rodman, who singled to start the inning, found herself on third after a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. Then in the bottom of the fifth with two outs and runners at second and third, Cali Niccum drove the ball through the left side to score the go-ahead runs with six outs remaining for MSUD.

Mann (4-13) was dominant from the get-go and held MSUD hit-less in four of its seven trips to the plate while allowing only six hits, an unearned run, and one walk while striking out three. Cheyenne Prieto (5-2) was dealt the loss after entering in the fourth inning the final 2.1 innings of play and giving up two runs on four hits while striking out one.
