Game Recap: Softball | | Hayden Mangan, Assistant AD-Communications & Fan Engagement

Skyhawks go Dutch with Roadrunners on the back of Mann’s dominant shutout

DURANGO, Colo. – Junior Hailie Mann shut out the Roadrunners for the first time this season and guided the Fort Lewis softball team to a 2-0 victory to close out the series and force a 2-2 series split with MSU Denver following a 5-1 game loss Monday afternoon on a brisk Aspen Field.

The Skyhawks split with the Roadrunners for a second consecutive season and moved up to 10-27 overall and 8-20 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. MSU Denver stands at 35-9 and 28-4 in league games.

Mann (5-13) earned her third career shutout and second in as many weeks. The five-foot-nine Tucson, Ariz., native has earned three wins in her last four outings and surrendered only three earned runs on 20 combined hits.

MSU Denver's Miki Berg led all hitters on the afternoon with a 3-4 performance that included one run scored and five runs batted in on a single, double, and a grand slam from the junior second basemen.

Game One – MSU Denver 5, Fort Lewis 1
Fort Lewis, primed to bounce back on day two and contend for the series against the invaders from Denver, Colo., jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a two-out double to right-center field off the bat of Catheryn Rodman in the bottom of the first inning.

Berg and MSU Denver responded promptly and tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning as the junior notched a double of her own to right-center and drove in Aaliyah Arellano who reached on a fielder's choice the previous at-bat.

Despite scattering four hits across the first, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, the Roadrunners took advantage of a hectic sixth inning to strike for a big score. After a fielder's choice with one out loaded the bases, Berg stepped to the plate and connected on a deep drive to right-center for a grand slam and the 5-1 lead.

Natalie Romero (8-3) earned the win in the circle and notched her third complete game of the season. A freshman from Anaheim, Calif., Romero surrendered four hits and one earned run while walking a pair.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 2, MSU Denver 0
Mann toed the rubber for the second consecutive day against the Roadrunners, and once again, held down one of the RMAC's top squads en route to her fifth win of the season and 12th complete game. Mann recorded four strikeouts, four hits, and one walk in just 76 pitches.

MSUD's Cheyenne Prieto (5-3) was dealt her second-straight loss at the hands of the Skyhawks after throwing 4.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Prieto also recorded the only two strikeouts for the Roadrunners in the game. Maddy Wilson (7-1) held FLC scoreless and hit-less in her 1.1 innings of relief.

FLC led off the bottom of the fourth inning with three straight singles capped by a perfect bunt just in front of the plate from Catheryn Rodman. Without wasting a second of momentum, Cara Daugherty stepped to the dish and drove the first pitch down the left field line, scoring the go-ahead runs with ease.

Quotable
"I'm really proud of how hard the girls competed all weekend. Even from the first game, they could have laid down a few times, but they continued to fight and competed against a really tough MSU Denver team. We played well and came out hitting the ball this morning, but unfortunately, the first game was one of those games where one pitch was the difference. I also can't say enough how proud I am of Hailie, she pitched out of her mind this weekend. Hailie's finally settling in after a rocky start to the year, gaining confidence, and pitching how she knows she can pitch; it's been exciting to see that out of her." – Head Coach Paige Adair
