Smith and Weigang lead Skyhawks cross country at Joe I. Vigil Invite

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2024 season against nationally ranked competition at the 31st annual Joe I. Vigil Invitational. The men scored 58 points while the women scored 72.

The men entered the race ranked #16 in the USTFCCCA Preseason poll and were joined at the line by #6 Adams State University and #13 CSU Pueblo. The women are ranked 21st in the poll and raced against #1 Adams State and #5 CSU Pueblo.

The men's 8k got underway to begin the collegiate portion of the invite at the Cattails Golf Course. For Fort Lewis, it was junior Elijah Smith who kicked off his season with a personal best to place second, running a time of 24:35.8. Smith had a photo finish as he fought for second place, coming in .1 seconds ahead of Juan Rosales of Adams State. Senior Caden Resendez followed in 11th place with a time of 25:09.9. Freshman Cesar Diaz and junior Cebastian Marquez followed in 13th and 14th place with times of 25:28.8 and 25:29.8, respectively. Juniors Skyler McIntyre (18th) and Brady Burrough (20th) rounded out the top six with times of 25:40.8 and 25:52.2. Junior Malakai Hanson was the seventh finisher for Fort Lewis with a 21st-place time of 26:17.2.

The women's 5k followed suit, and the Skyhawks were paced by returning All-American in Linda Weigang who earned a fourth-place finish with a personal best time of 17:34.9. Junior Althea Griffith followed with a 15th-place time of 18:53.0, and sophomore Tessa Stadler was right behind her with a 16th place finish at 18:54.1. Junior Skylar Charlie (19th) and junior Claire Peterson (20th) were next with times of 20:00.7 and 20:15.1, respectively. The final member of the top seven for Fort Lewis was junior Cadence Corby who closed a time of 20:27.8 to place 21st.

Up Next
In two weeks, the Skyhawks will travel to Denver for the Roadrunners Invitational, hosted by MSU Denver. The race will take place on Saturday, September 21 at Washington Park--the eventual site of the NCAA Regionals.
