No. 5 Fort Lewis tops UCCS in physical bout, 2-1

Andreottola assists twice, Guintini nets team-leading fifth goal

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – While both sides combined for 28 fouls and 11 cautions, it was the No. 5 nationally ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (4-0-2) that fought through to the final minute to emerge with a 2-1 victory over University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-3-3) in a non-conference match inside Mountain Lion Stadium.

Fort Lewis' offense was limited to a season-low 13 total shots, with only four shots on goal, but the Skyhawks managed to find the back of the net twice in the second half to remain unbeaten through six matches and earn their third-straight win. UCCS, on the other hand, fired off 11 shots, with three shots on goal, but only found the net on a penalty kick.

The Mountain Lions got off to a speedy start in the opening minutes, forcing the Skyhawks into their own defense third for much of possession. UCCS' first opportunity came in the eighth minute when Miles Seminario went streaking down the left side to the top corner of the penalty area, but Lucas Martin was there to make a diving save inside the near post. Martin put on the theatrics once again in the 33rd minute, diving ahead into the penalty line to halt a crossing pass. Martin would cap the evening with two total saves.

The Skyhawks began to build momentum in the final minutes of the opening half and kept up the energy immediately out of the intermission. Fort Lewis' pressure finally broke through in the 58th minute, as Alessio Andreottola claimed possession inside the crease after a series of give-and-go touches, chipping his shot over his defender before Yohann Fila added the final touch with a header into the empty net.

It was Andreottola who set the stage for yet another score in the 70th minute, slowly taking space down the right channel before cutting back to his left and sending service into the box where an unmarked-Lorenz Guintini slipped through the back line and used a high touch to slip past the goalkeeper. The score marked Guintini's fifth goal of the season, and his second game-winner, as well as Andreottola's seventh assist in six matches.

UCCS spoiled the shutout just eight minutes later as a missed tackle by the Skyhawks inside the penalty area clipped the legs of Seminario and set the stage for a penalty kick; the second surrendered by FLC this season. Martin went right, and Seminario went left to pull the Mountain Lions back within a goal.
