Fort Lewis walks-off No. 14 Cal State San Marcos, falls to Azusa Pacific

Skyhawks start 2026 with a top 25 win

IRVINE, Calif. – Makenna Milliman doubled in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Fort Lewis softball team (1-2) past No. 14 nationally ranked California State University San Marcos (2-1), 3-2, before the Skyhawks later fell 10-3 to Azusa Pacific University (3-1) 10-3 in the night cap on day two of the 2026 Concordia Kickoff Classic at the OC Great Park.

The Skyhawks offense found better success on day two, racking up 12 hits, but still left 10 runners stranded on the basepaths. Both Milliman and Alyssa Fockler had three hits across the afternoon, and while Milliman led all Skyhawks with two runs batted in (RBI), Fockler led the squad with two runs scored: one in each contest. Hailie Mann (1-0) led the Fort Lewis pitching staff with five strikeouts.

Fort Lewis 3, No. 14 Cal State San Marcos, 2
Mann toed the rubber for the first time in 2026, and the five-year veteran from Tucson, Ariz., held a team that won 43 games last year and batted a .314 average as a team to seven hits and two earned runs with one walk against five strikeouts. Mann forced the Cougars into 11 groundouts and eight flyouts.

Cal State San Marcos lived up to its national ranking early, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead on a one-out solo home run from Jillian Albayati in the top of the first inning. Fort Lewis answered immediately, as Fockler used a one-out single to reach safely before later coming around to score on a single to left field from Izzy Cueva. The Skyhawks extended their lead an inning later as Trista Hoobler laid down a sacrifice bunt to push across Natalie Rodman, who reached on a hit-by-pitch to start the inning. Later in the eighth, Fockler posted another one-out single to put runners on the corners, and with two outs, Milliman sent them to the dish with a double off the left-center field fence.

Right-hander Hailey Shiflett (1-0) started in the circle for CSUSM, going 3.0 innings with a line of four hits, two runs, one earned run, and one hit-by-pitch through 14 batters faced. Jordan Hill (0-1) suffered the loss, despite allowing just three hits while striking out five through 4.2 innings of work. Fort Lewis' game-winning run came across unearned with Alex Tenorio reaching safely on an error by the third baseman.

Azusa Pacific 10, Fort Lewis 3
Izzy Cueva (0-1) took to the circle for her collegiate pitching debut, and the freshman was chased out after 4.0 innings of work, surrendering nine earned runs on eight walks, six hits, a hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch. Chloe Padilla (0-1) was lights-out in relief, giving up just one hit while striking out another in the final 2.0 innings of the contest.

Azusa Pacific scored early and often, catching fire in the first frame with five runs scored, and three runners left on base by way of two hits, five walks, and an error. The Cougars tacked on in the bottom of the third inning, putting up another three runs on a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly. Later in the bottom of the fifth, a hit-by-pitch and a bases-loaded single supplied APU with its final two runs of the game.

Fort Lewis scored all three runs in the top of the fourth inning on a combined four hits and one error. The Skyhawks opened the frame with three-straight singles, capped by Milliman's RBI shot to center field. Two at-bats later, Alejandra Medina grounded out to the shortstop to drive in a second run. Natalie Rodman drove in the final run for the blue and gold with an infield single to the shortstop.

Allie Reese (1-0) earned the win on a short outing, throwing 3.2 innings on 68 pitches with four hits, one earned run, one walk, and two strikeouts to her name. Maddy Debs (1-0) went the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one, walking another, and making one hit-by-pitch.
