Skyhawks surrender series to Roadrunners

Fockler has a hand in four of Fort Lewis’ five runs

DENVER, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball (1-13, 0-4 RMAC) was felled 12-2 in five innings and later 7-3 in game two by Metropolitan State University of Denver (9-3, 4-0 RMAC) to ultimately surrender its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series of the season to the Roadrunners four games to none.

Only seven different Skyhawks managed to produce hits against the MSU Denver pitching staff, which now carries a 4.25 earned run average with a .282 opposing batting average. Alex Tenorio and Skyler Dietz were the only pair to record a hit in each game, with both players totaling three hits on the day, and both players also scoring one run each. Alyssa Fockler all put but Fort Lewis on the scoreboard in both games, totaling four runs-batted-in (RBI) while scoring once.

MSU Denver 12, Fort Lewis 2 (5 Inn.)
The Roadrunners would not be denied their series-clinching win, erupting for 12 runs on nine hits and one error, most by way of three home runs in the first two innings. In the bottom half of the first, Mackenzie Pearson and Cheyenne Prieto launched a pair of two-run and solo home runs, respectively, before Pearson belted a grand slam in her next at-bat later in the second.

MSU Denver added another three runs in the bottom of the third inning with a wild pitch, a single back through the middle, and a sacrifice fly to right field, all in succession. The final two runs came across in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to RBI singles from Janessa Esquibel and Trinity Kennemer.

Fort Lewis found late life in its half of the fifth, with Dietz, Tenorio, and Hoobler all singling to open the frame before an infield fielder's choice off the bat of Fockler allowed Dietz to score and break the shutout. A wild pitch in the next at-bat allowed Tenorio to swipe home.

Izzy Cueva (0-2) took the loss, surrendering seven earned runs on four hits, one walk, and a hit-by-pitch in 1.1 innings of work and 42 total pitches. Cueva struck out one Roadrunner. Addison Gavigan (0-3) came in on relief, allowing four earned runs on five hits, seven walks, and one wild pitch against a pair of strikeouts. Natalie Romero (3-2) went the distance for MSUD, giving up two runs on seven hits, one wild pitch, and one hit-by-pitch, all in 87 pitches.

MSU Denver 7, Fort Lewis 3
Chloe Padilla (0-6) stepped to the rubber for her second bout against MSU Denver, and the sophomore right-hander stood tall through her first five innings of work, allowing one unearned run on five hits through the first five innings. Fort Lewis got out in front early on the back of Padilla's success, utilizing a two-run blast from Fockler, her first of the season and second of her career, to take a 2-0 lead in the top-half of the second inning. Later in the fourth, the Skyhawks stretched the lead to 3-1 on a double from Fockler to left field after Carmen Alexadner reached moments earlier with a one-out double to right field.

The Roadrunners flipped the script in the home half of the sixth inning, erupting for six runs on seven hits and one error while leaving two base runners stranded. Brooklyn Enny led off the inning with a solo blast, Zoe Stanzyk added a two-run homer, Pearson a two-RBI double, and Prieto and Enny a pair of RBI singles to put away the game.

Samantha Mader (1-0) started in the circle for MSUD, lasting 3.1 innings before being chased out after allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk. Mader matched Padilla with a game-high three strikeouts. Kianna Butler (2-0) made a short relief appearance with three hits and one walk in 2.0 innings of work, and Brooklyn Levin (3-0) ultimately captured the win with no hits allowed and one strikeout through the final 1.2 innings.
