Skyhawks fall behind 0-2 to Orediggers in four-game set

Medina notches first multi-homer game by a Skyhawk since 2024

DURANGO, Colo. – Unable to find the big hit in key moments leaving 15 runners stranded on bases, the Fort Lewis softball team (1-15, 0-6 RMAC) fell behind 0-2 in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series with Colorado School of Mines (8-8, 4-2 RMAC) as the Orediggers downed the Skyhawks 4-2 in game one and stormed back for a 5-4 victory in game two up on Aspen Field.

It was a career afternoon for senior Alejandra Medina, who played in her final home opener on Aspen Field, went 4-for-7, with two solo home runs for a pair of runs scored and a pair of runs-batted-in (RBI). Medina is the first Skyhawk with a multi-home run game since Kayla Stone in 2024. Alyssa Fockler and Izzy Cueva had a pair of three-hit games in games one and two, respectively, while Alex Tenorio was the only player, alongside Medina, with a hit in each game.

Mines 4, Fort Lewis 2
Colorado School of Mines jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top-half first, and Taylor Wayne (5-1) rode the momentum through 6.0 innings en route to her third consecutive win in the circle. The Orediggers utilized a lead-off single from Kellan Ton and a fielder's choice the following play to put ducks on the pond, and one sacrifice bunt later, Emily Rogers doubled to right-center field to drive in both runners. A Skyhawks fielding error allowed CSM to plate a third run in the frame.

Fort Lewis responded later in the home half of the third inning, taking advantage of back-to-back walks and a double-steal from Skyler Dietz and Tenorio to put runners on second and third base. McKenna Timmons then drove in Dietz on a forced infield error by the Orediggers third baseman.

The Orediggers picked up a much-needed insurance run at the top of the fifth, scoring with two outs by way of an RBI single to center field from Katie Bauer. Fort Lewis had one of its strongest scoring opportunities in the bottom of the sixth, putting Skyhawks on every base following back-to-back singles off the bats of Fockler and Medina. The Skyhawks managed just one run, however, scoring on a ground ball double play before a fly out neutralized the threat.

Wayne surrendered just one earned run on eight hits and three walks before Madyson Ortiz (0-1) slammed the door with authority, forcing the Skyhawks to go three-up, three-down with one strikeout to capture the first Orediggers save of the season as well as the first of her career. Chloe Padilla (0-7) took the loss with three earned runs on seven hits, four walks, a wild pitch, and a hit-by-pitch. Padilla led all pitchers with five strikeouts.

Mines 5, Fort Lewis 4 (8 Inn.)
Fort Lewis flipped the script with an emphatic start in game two, going up 2-0 early, scoring one run on an RBI single from Izzy Cueva to left-center field after Tenorio belted a lead-off double off the third-base bag and down the line. Medina followed it up with a moonshot home run, her first of the year and the third of her career, to dead-center field on the first pitch in the bottom of the second.

Makenna Milliman drove in a third run for the Skyhawks in the bottom of the third, and the run proved pivotal as Mines found an answer in the fifth inning. The Orediggers paired up three hits with an FLC error to first score on an infield hit, and later on a deep sacrifice fly to center field from Kendall Aragon. Kellan Ton tripled to help Mines tie the game up in the top-half of the seventh, and the Orediggers secured the day one sweep an inning later in the eighth, first scoring on a single through the left side after an error put runners on second and third, then once more with a sacrifice fly to right field moments later. Medina sent out her second solo homer of the game over the fence in left field in the bottom of the eighth as FLC's only hit in the final three innings.

Hailie Mann (1-3) went the distance for the third time this season, surrendering only two earned runs on 11 scattered hits alongside one walk and a game-high six strikeouts. Mann recorded the most strikeouts by any pitcher across the afternoon. Ellen Shull (1-2) started in the circle for CSM, but was chased out after 2.0 innings of work as the Skyhawks scored one earned run in each of the first three innings off Shull. Rylee Church (1-1) was nearly lights-out in relief, tossing 6.0 innings with four hits, one walk, one earned run, and four strikeouts to her name.
