Orediggers topple Skyhawks in series finale

Fort Lewis drops home-opening series to Mines

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College softball (1-17, 0-8 RMAC) wrapped up its four-game series with Colorado School of Mines (10-8, 6-2 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon as the Orediggers raced past the Skyhawks for a 6-3 win in game one and a 9-1 win through six innings in game two.

The freshman combo of Izzy Cueva and Paige Fuller, alongside junior, but first-year softball player Trista Hoobler, paced the Skyhawks offensively, with all three players recording a team-high two hits on the day, with a hit in each game. Farmington, N.M., native Amiah DeClusin made her Fort Lewis debut, recording a double for her first hit in her second at-bat of the day. Fuller and Alex Tenorio tied for a team-high two runs across both games.

Mines 6, Fort Lewis 3
Fort Lewis got out to a sluggish start in game three of the series, and Colorado School of Mines punished them for it, reeling off four runs in the top of the third inning to leap out in front. A lead-off walk allowed Kendall Aragon to open the scoring with a run-batted-in (RBI) double to left-center, and following a hit-by-pitch an at-bat later, Katie Bauer stepped up and launched a no-doubter over the right field fence for three RBIs and her second home run of the season.

A rare triple-steal put Fort Lewis on the scoreboard as with runners on first and third base, Tenorio stole second, allowing Fuller to swipe home on the throw. However, as the Orediggers threw the ball to second, and back to home, Tenorio took advantage of the chaos and swiped third base to keep the scoring threat 60 feet from home. Izzy Cueva singled on the second pitch she saw in the next at-bat, scoring Tenorio and cutting the deficit to two runs.

The momentum carried the Skyhawks into the bottom of the sixth, with DeClusin rifling a double to left-center field for her first career hit in her first appearance. Hoobler singled in the next at-bat to move over DeClusin, who later came around to score on an RBI single to right field off the bat of Fuller. Mines would all but put the game away in its next trip to the plate, scoring a pair of runs on a bases-clearing triple to right field from Emiaj Self.

Kat Miller (2-2) stood in the circle for the first 4.1 innings of action, surrendering one unearned run on four hits and four walks against a three-pack of strikeouts. Taylor Wayne made her second appearance of the weekend in relief, with two earned runs on four hits, one walk, and a wild pitch in 2.2 innings of work. Wayne recorded a game-high four strikeouts. Chloe Padilla (0-8) went the distance for six earned runs on eight hits, four walks, and a wild pitch, while striking out three.

Mines 9, Fort Lewis 1 (6 Inn.)
The Orediggers did not want to be denied their first four-game series sweep of the season, jumping out to an early lead thanks to three hits in the first inning that culminated in an RBI single back through the middle from Aragon. CSM had an early threat with a lead-off single from Kellan Ton, but Alyssa Fockler caught Ton stealing on the first pitch of the next at-bat. Ton would later halt Fort Lewis' first threat of the game in left field in the bottom of the third inning, making a phenomenal catch up against the wall to all but surely saved one run and extra bases for FLC.

Fort Lewis' defense came up big in the top of the fourth inning, holding Mines to just two runs despite four consecutive base hits. While Ton managed to single back through the middle to plate the pair, Fockler managed to cut off the throw home and catch the Orediggers off balance at second base for the final out of the inning. Insurance came for CSM soon after, tacking on three runs on four hits before Fockler caught an Oredigger off-guard with a back-pick to third base to end the frame.

Colorado School of Mines found its groove in the fifth and sixth innings, erupting for three runs in each frame on a combined seven hits, including three doubles, and a trio of walks. The Orediggers finished the afternoon with 16 hits in the game. Fort Lewis began to make it interesting in the late innings, as Fuller singled, stole third base, and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Tenorio.

Madyson Ortiz (1-1) absolutely dealt in her first win of the season, recording 61 strikes in her 82 total pitches, surrendering just one run on four hits, one walk, a wild pitch, and four strikeouts. Hailie Mann (1-4) went 4.1 innings in the circle before getting chased out with six earned runs on 13 hits and a wild pitch while striking out a pair. Addison Gavigan (0-3) wrapped up the final 1.2 innings on relief, surrendering three runs on three hits and three walks.
