Fort Lewis drops two to Oklahoma Baptist, No. 11 Central Oklahoma

Timely hitting sinks Skyhawks twice in Edmond

EDMOND, Okla. – Unable to keep pace with either opponent's offense, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks softball team (1-6) fell twice on Friday afternoon on day one of the UCO–OC Classic, first by way of a 7-1 decision to Oklahoma Baptist University (7-0) and secondly by way of a 5-0 shutout at the hands of No. 11 nationally ranked University of Central Oklahoma (5-2).

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Makenna Milliman was the only Skyhawk with two hits in a game, singling twice against the nationally ranked Brochos. Redshirt senior Alex Tenorio and senior Cali Niccum both matched Milliman with two hits in total, but managed one in each game. Niccum scored the only run of the day. In total, the Skyhawks opposition out-hit the visitors from Durango by a combined margin of 19-8.

Oklahoma Baptist 7, Fort Lewis 1
Oklahoma Baptist cruised to a 6-0 start in 2026 on the back of a commanding performance from senior pitcher Jaycee Shaffer (6-0). The gun-slinging right-hander was on fire from the start, going the distance on 105 pitches while striking out 15 batters: the most by a Division II pitcher this season heading into today. Shaffer surrendered one earned run on a pair of Skyhawks hits, including a lead-off double for Niccum in the top of the fourth inning, and a lead-off single from Alyssa Fockler in the sixth.

Fort Lewis pushed across its lone run of the game in the top of the fourth with a passed ball followed by a throwing error from the catcher, allowing Niccum, who had doubled earlier in the frame, to come around and score. The Bison responded immediately, pushing across the tying run on a double-steal later in the bottom half of the inning.

A Skyhawks error set up senior infielder Ally Ryan for a two-run shot in the bottom half of the fifth to recapture the OBU lead, before the Bison sealed the game with a bases-clearing triple from sophomore Kaley Cook in the bottom of the sixth, with Cook coming into score on a Greenlee Wells double the next at-bat.

Hailie Mann (1-1) was dealt the loss, tossing 113 pitches for nine hits, seven runs–only four of which were earned–four walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two strikeouts.

No. 11 Central Oklahoma 5, Fort Lewis 0
Top-ranked Central Oklahoma capitalized on the comforts of its home field to jump out to an early lead, scoring thrice on four hits in the Bronchos opening frame. Senior Kennedy Clark singled through the middle to plate the opening run, and freshman Hannah Demoff doubled to left field two at-bats later to push across another pair.

The Bronchos would strike again in the bottom of the third inning, this time for just two runs on three hits, with both scores coming home thanks to singles from freshmen Haley Gallo and Bonnie Childs.

Fort Lewis' offense strung together six hits in the contest, scattering two in the top-half of the first inning, and one each in the third through sixth innings. All five runs went in the books as earned against sophomore right-handed pitcher Chloe Padilla (0-3), who struck out one while surrendering four walks and a wild pitch.

Junior right-hander Shelby Beard (3-1) tallied her third win of the season with five hits and one walk allowed to the Skyhawks in 5.0 innings of work. True freshman Carleigh Kinnard went the final 2.0 innings with one hit and four strikeouts to her name.
