Cold bats sink Skyhawks in Saturday afternoon losses

Fort Lewis falls to Oklahoma Baptist, No. 25 Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Lewis' (1-8) offense came alive a little too late in its game one 8-5 loss to Cameron University (4-3) to open the afternoon, and the offense couldn't travel next door as the Skyhawks later dropped a 7-1 nightcap to No. 25 nationally ranked Oklahoma Christian University (7-1) on the Eagles' home diamond.

McKenna Timmons and Alyssa Fockler led all Skyhawks with three hits on the afternoon, Timmons' by way of a career-high 3-for-4 outing with a pair of doubles against the Aggies in game one. Fockler also matched Skyler Dietz as the only Skyhawks to earn a hit in both games.

Cameron 8, Fort Lewis 5
Addison Gavigan (0-2) and Mikah Vann (1-2) toed the rubber for both sides, and the duo provided a pitchers' duel through the first 5.0 innings. The Skyhawks were first to threaten after 1.5 innings of hitless action, with Makenna Milliman and Timmons each recording singles around a Carmen Alexander walk to leave the bases loaded. Cameron found a single in the top half of the third through fifth innings, but otherwise came up empty.

The Aggies erupted in the top of the sixth, capitalized on a hit-by-pitch and a walk paired with five hits, including a pinch-hit two-RBI double from sophomore Haley Gardella, to take a five-run lead and chase out Gavigan. Izzy Cueva (0-1) came in on relief, surrendering three unearned runs in the top-half of the seventh on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Vann came away with her first win of the season on 5.1 innings of work, finishing with six hits, one earned run, a walk, and a game-high three strikeouts.

Fort Lewis showed signs of life late in the sixth, pushing across its first run of the game on back-to-back doubles from Alexander and Timmons. Then in the seventh, Skyler Dietz kicked off the inning with a triple to left center field and came around to score on an Alyssa Fockler single the next at-bat. Trista Hoobler later singled for her first collegiate hit, and Alexander stepped to the plate once more, this time teeing off for first career home run, and the Skyhawks first of the season, with a three-RBI blast to left field.

No. 25 Oklahoma Christian 7, Fort Lewis 1
Top-ranked Oklahoma Christian lived up to its preseason hype in the nightcap, reeling off nine hits for seven runs with scores in the first through third innings. Three consecutive singles with a fielder's choice in between were capped off with a two-RBI double from Kallie Rupp to go up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles tacked on another run in the second thanks to a lead-off homer from Marti Yaeger, and added two more in the third courtesy of a Skyhawks throwing error on a stolen base followed by a double from Rupp.

Fort Lewis managed to avoid the shutout in the top half of the sixth, utilizing back-to-back singles from Dietz and Fockler to put runners on second and third to set the stage for an RBI-groundout off Hoobler's bat.

Senior Jill Dickson extended her record to 4-0 for the season, using just 51 pitches to no-hit the Skyhawks through 4.0 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Ella Resendiz (1-0) came in on relief, limiting Fort Lewis to one run on three hits while matching Dickson with five strikeouts. Hailie Mann (1-2) went through 2.0 innings before being chased out with five earned runs on eight hits and one walk. Chloe Padilla (0-3) closed out the game, surrendering one earned run on one hit and a wild pitch with two strikeouts.
