Skyhawks pitching grounds Eagles on Saturday

Padilla records new career-high, second-most strikeouts by an RMAC pitcher in 2026

DURANGO, Colo. – Backed by a combined 18 strikeouts and a pair of dominant complete games in the circle for Hailie Mann and Chloe Padilla, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks softball team (10-34, 9-25 RMAC) turned in a pair of 3-1 and 1-0 victories over the Chadron State College Eagles (4-39, 4-30 RMAC) to open the two team's four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.

Game One – Fort Lewis 3, Chadron State 1
Two of the RMAC's leaders in total innings pitched stood in the circle to open the series, and the rubber match lived up to the hype. Mann (6-10) walked away with the win thanks to late life from her offense, and the senior matched Belle Akins (2-16) with a season-high seven strikeouts.

While the duo combined for 14 strikeouts across the game's 39 total outs, it was Mann who edged Akins, not surrendering a walk while also scattering four hits for one earned run, a solo home run by freshman Brynn Trujillo, the first of her young career, in the top of the fifth inning, and capped her 12th complete game of the season in 97 pitches. Akins surrendered just one earned run on nine hits alongside a wild pitch and one walk, her 42nd in 109.2 innings of work this year.

McKenna Timmons put Fort Lewis ahead early in the third inning of action, singling to center field to bring around Alyssa Fockler, who opened the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third following a walk to Mia Cueva and a single from Izzy Cueva. The Skyhawks jumped back in front later in the home-half of the sixth inning, first with a Stella Romeo double down the left field line, and again for insurance with a pinch-hit run-batted-in (RBI) single from Skyler Dietz the following at-bat. Mia Cueva posted the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and a walk.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 1, Chadron State 0
Fort Lewis' dominance in the circle continued in game two, this time off the right arm of Padilla (2-15). The five-foot-seven sophomore put together the most impressive performance of her young career, going the distance on 125 pitches to punch out a career-high 11 Eagles, which also stands as the second-most strikeouts by a pitcher in the RMAC this season. Despite surrendering four singles and a trio of walks, Padilla worked the clean ledger for her first career shutout.

McKenna Sides (0-11) stood in for Chadron State and was nearly as dominant, with the true freshman scattering eight hits, a hit-batter, and a wild pitch, to hold Fort Lewis to just a single run scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sides' eight hits are the fewest she has allowed in a complete game this year.

Both teams combined to strand 14 runners on the base paths, with the Skyhawks stranding a pair more, 8-6. Rhiannon Lister, who made her first appearance in 2026, went 2-for-2 on the afternoon with a pair of singles as well as a hit-by-pitch (HBP). Fockler had the other multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 while scoring the game-winning run. It was Dietz once again to drive in the lone run of the contest, singling to right field with two outs to bring around Fockler from second base.

Notes
-Fort Lewis captured its second and third-straight wins over Chadron State, but the Skyhawks still trail the Eagles 29-21-1 all-time.
-Chloe Padilla's 11 strikeouts are the most in her career, the second-most by an RMAC pitcher this season, and marked the third time she has struck out 10 or more batters. In addition, Padilla earned her first career shutout and the second by a Skyhawk this year.
-Hailie Mann's seven strikeouts set a new season-high and finished one shy of her career-high. Additionally, Mann's 97 pitches are her fewest in a complete game this year.
-Mia Cueva, Alyssa Fockler, and Rhiannon Lister each posted a multi-hit game for their respective fifth, ninth, and first multi-hit games this year.
-With a single in both games, Izzy Cueva extended her team-leading hitting streak to 10 games. Alyssa Fockler and Skyler Dietz are riding six-game hit streaks, Makenna Milliman a five-game streak, and McKenna Timmons a three-game streak. Cueva's hit streak is the longest by a Skyhawk in 2026.
-Alyssa Fockler and Izzy Cueva lead Fort Lewis, having reached base safely in 12 and 10 consecutive games, respectively.
-Alyssa Fockler was the only player from either team to record three hits across both games.
