Softball secures RMAC series over Chadron State

Cueva grabs third-straight home win

DURANGO, Colo. – Izzy Cueva pitched her way to her third-straight win in the circle on Aspen Field, and helped the Skyhawks claim game one 3-1 before the Eagles bounced back to win the final game 2-1, ultimately helping the Fort Lewis softball team (11-35, 10-26 RMAC) claim a 3-1 Rock Mountain Athletic Conference series over Chadron State College (5-40, 5-31 RMAC).

Game One – Fort Lewis 3, Chadron State 1
The theme of pitchers' duals between Fort Lewis and Chadron State stayed true in their third meeting of the series, this time featuring Izzy Cueva (3-4) and the Eagles' Brynn Tujillo (2-13). Despite suffering the loss, Trujillo gave one of her better efforts this season, recording a career-high eight strikeouts while giving up a single earned run on eight hits, and a wild pitch with three scoreless frames.

Meanwhile, Izzy Cueva picked up her third win over her last four starts and registered a career-high three strikeouts. The freshman from Vacaville, Calif., scattered five hits for a single earned run, courtesy of a lead-off solo home run from Chadron's Tiffani Mein in the top of the second inning. Additionally, Cueva did not allow a walk, but hit two batters across her 76 pitches.

Once trailing, Fort Lewis managed to score consecutively over the next three innings to capture the win, kick-started by a run-batted-in (RBI) double off the bat of Mia Cueva that scraped the top of the left-center field fence. The Skyhawks got crafty later in the fourth, scoring on a suicide-squeeze bunt off the bat of McKenna Timmons, who reached safely as Skyler Dietz swiped home. Makenna Milliman would touch home for the final run of the game, scoring on an RBI single from Carmen Alexander through the left side after previously reaching on an infield single.

Game Two – Chadron State 2, Fort Lewis 1
Chadron State managed to escape the series with a victory in the finale, snapping an 18-game losing streak dating back to Mar. 21. The Eagles' success rode on the shoulders of sophomore Belle Akins (3-16), who was nearly lights-out in the circle, tossing her 12th complete game of the year on 110 pitches and holding Fort Lewis to one earned run on nine hits while not surrendering any free passes. Akins managed a game-high five strikeouts, putting her season total to 87, which is good for the third-most in the conference.

Fort Lewis struck first in the home half of the third inning, keyed in by a lead-off double that glanced off the left-center field fence from Alyssa Fockler. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved Fockler to third and an infield fly, Dietz punched an RBI single down the left field line to break the stalemate. The Eagles responded quickly, using a two-out bases-loaded two-RBI single from Sydney Lowery to score the tying and go-ahead runs.

Addison Gavigan (0-6) suffered the loss despite a quality outing, finishing with two earned runs on eight hits, two walks, and a hit-batter on her ledger against three strikeouts.
