Grand once again! Alexander clinches Friday afternoon split

Alexander rifles second grand slam of 2026 campaign

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team (12-36, 11-27 RMAC) suffered a narrow 5-3 loss at the hands of the Yellow Jackets in game one, but the Skyhawks came roaring back in game two, capped by a last-strike, go-ahead grand slam to dead-center by Carmen Alexander that secured a 5-3 come-from-behind win, knotting up Fort Lewis and Black Hills State University (23-26, 20-18 RMAC) 1-1 in the two teams four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series up on TC Colorado Field at Triple Crown Sports.

Game One – Black Hills State 5, Fort Lewis 3
Black Hills State kicked off the series scoring in its first trip to the plate, utilizing a run-batted-in (RBI) single through the middle from Carli Maley, to capture the early lead and eventually, hold off Fort Lewis for the win behind a quality start from Kaitlyn Geschwill (12-10).

The Skyhawks managed to get on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, first with an RBI single down the right field line from Makenna Milliman, and again on an infield throwing error forced by Alejandra Medina to take the lead. Skyler Dietz would keep the Skyhawks soaring in the fourth, forcing another infield error to drive in a run and jump back out in front, 3-2, after a sacrifice fly from Maley the inning prior knotted things up at 2-2.

BHSU went on to seal the game with a three-run fifth inning, first tying the game on an infield single from Desi Hernandez before Caylee Mann put an RBI double down the left field line, and Audrey Fouras sent a shallow fly ball to left field for the sacrifice fly.

Geschwill managed to scatter six hits and five walks for one earned run in her 11th complete game of the year. Hailie Mann (6-11) suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs on 12 hits and one walk through her 6.0 innings of work. Mann edged the RMAC leader in strikeouts, 6-to-5.

Game Two – Fort Lewis 5, Black Hills State 3
The Yellow Jackets looked poised once again to defeat the Skyhawks in a low-scoring affair behind a greatly effective outing from Sophia Honse (5-6). The redshirt junior held Fort Lewis to a single earned run through the first 20 outs, dancing around nine hits, a pair of walks, and a wild pitch.

Offensively, BHSU struck for two of its three runs in the first and second innings, first with an RBI walk drawn by Caylee Mann in the home-half of the first, and once more in the second with an RBI back through the middle from Sammie Kaufman-Warner.

Chloe Padilla (3-15), allowing one final run in the bottom of the seventh inning by way of a fielder's choice, followed by a Skyhawks throwing error, otherwise limited the Yellow Jackets to just four hits against four strikeouts, but gave up five walks and hit a pair of batters.

Thankfully, Carmen Alexander picked up her sophomore pitcher, as the true freshman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, two outs, and when down to her final strike, Alexander belted a no-doubter of a grand slam to dead-center field that cleared the 240' fence with ease for her team-leading eighth home run of the season, and second grand slam.

Notes
-Fort Lewis still maintains a 35-11 lead all-time over Black Hills State, and with its game two win, is poised to force at least a series split, or win the series with two games tomorrow after the Yellow Jackets won the 2025 season series 3-1 in Durango, Colo.

-Chloe Padilla picked up her third victory of the season through her 13th complete game. Padilla also improved to a team-leading 85 strikeouts this season, which currently sits fifth in the RMAC.
-Skyler Dietz led all players with a two-hit performance in both games, finishing the afternoon 4-for-7 with two runs scored and one walk.
