Cowgirls corral Skyhawks twice on Thursday

Fort Lewis falls behind 0-2 in series

DURANGO, Colo. – Unable to overcome free passes at the plate and timely hitting by the Cowgirls, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks softball team (6-30, 5-21 RMAC) fell 7-6 in game one and 13-5 through five innings in game two at the hands of New Mexico Highlands University (10-28, 8-18 RMAC) under the lights of Aspen Field to open the two teams' four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.

Game One – New Mexico Highlands 7, Fort Lewis 6
Offense came often and in plenty in the series opener, paced by Fort Lewis taking the opening lead in the bottom of the first inning on a fielder's choice to the right side off the bat of Izzy Cueva after Alex Tenorio kicked off the action with a lead-off triple. New Mexico Highlands retook a 2-1 lead in the top of the second thanks to a two-run batted in (RBI) from Andrea DeLaTrinidad. Fort Lewis tied it back up in the bottom of the second on a double-steal from Trista Hoobler and Tenorio that forced a Cowgirls throwing error.

The Cowgirls later took their first lead in the series, 3-2, at the top of the fourth inning, scoring on a lead-off solo home run from Hallie Watkins. The lead later ballooned up to 7-2 on the back of a four-run fifth inning, capitalizing on an RBI double to left field off the bat of Jazmyn Griego before Watkins stepped up and belted a three-run homer off the bleachers in left field.

Fort Lewis came roaring back in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring four runs of its own via a two-RBI double from Izzy Cueva, an RBI single from Carmen Alexander, and an RBI double from Alyssa Fockler. Despite pulling within one run, NMHU's Liliana Vigil German (1-3) was lights-out in relief, picking up her first save of the season after holding FLC hitless in 2.2 innings of work with two walks and two strikeouts to her ledger. Jolissa Valdez (4-9) picked up the win with five earned runs on nine hits, two walks, and a wild pitch against one strikeout in 4.1 innings.

Hailie Mann (4-8) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits, four walks, and a pair of hit batters. Mann matched Vigil German with two strikeouts.

Game Two – New Mexico Highlands 13, Fort Lewis 5 (5 Inn.)
New Mexico Highlands cruised to another victory in game two, primarily off the Fort Lewis pitching staff's struggles around the zone. The Cowgirls racked up all 13 runs on just seven hits, taking advantage of 14 walks drawn. Chloe Padilla (1-14) toed the rubber for the Skyhawks, tossing 3.2 innings with 10 earned runs on five hits and 13 walks against a game-high four strikeouts. Addison Gavigan (0-5) went the final 1.1 innings with three earned runs on two hits and a walk to her name.

The first crooked inning came in the top of the second when NMHU plated five runs on four consecutive walks, capped with an RBI single from Cheyenne Ben, an RBI double from Yasmin Villa, and a sacrifice fly from Jazmyn Griego. Greigo (4-7) made the start for the Cowgirls in the circle, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks as well as a wild pitch in 3.0 innings of work. Vigil German was quality in relief once more, holding the Skyhawks to two earned runs on two hits and four walks across the final 2.0 innings.

Ben picked up a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, and the Cowgirls erupted twice more for four runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles from Giana Marez and Ben, and another three runs in the top of the fifth inning to institute the run-rule on the back of a three-run homer to right field from Aliya Rhees.

Tenorio kick-started the Skyhawks offense once again, rifling a lead-off homer on the first pitch she saw to left field in Fort Lewis' first at-bat of the game. Tenorio's lead-off homer is the first by an FLC student-athlete since 2021. Alexander later rocked an RBI single to left field before Izzy Cueva swiped home on a wild pitch. The final pair of runs came in the last inning of the game by way of an RBI groundout from McKenna Timmons and an RBI single to right field from Hoobler.
