Softball drops two on opening day

Skyhawks fall to Golden Eagles, Vulcans

IRVINE, Calif. – The Fort Lewis College softball team (0-2) was felled 1-0 by Concordia University Irvine (2-0) and 5-1 by the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (1-1) on the opening day of the 2026 season in its first two games of the Concordia Kickoff Classic at the OC Great Park.

Fort Lewis found 10 hits across the day, with a balanced five hits in each contest. The Skyhawks pushed across just one run in both games, scoring on a double from Izzy Cueva to mark the true freshman's first hit and first run batted in (RBI) in her first career at-bat. Alex Tenorio led Fort Lewis with a 3-for-6 afternoon, while Cali Niccum and Carmen Alexander enjoyed two-hit days as well.

(RV) Concordia Irvine 1, Fort Lewis 0
Chloe Padilla (0-1) toed the rubber for the season-opener, and the Skyhawks' wins leader (four) from last season held a Concordia Irvine squad that won 41 games last year, made it to the NCAA west regionals, and earned votes on this year's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) preseason top 25 poll, to just two hits in six innings of work and 90 total pitches. The Golden Eagles did not record a hit until Morgan Kneubuhler singled to right field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Concordia Irvine saved its final hit for the bottom of the sixth, with Veronica Moore leading off the inning with a single to right field. After a groundout pushed pinch-runner Kaitlin Murphy to third base, CUI then found the go-ahead run two at-bats later when an infield error allowed Murphy to swipe home unearned. Jayden Nishi (1-0) earned the win, pitching seven shutout innings with six strikeouts on the ledger despite allowing five hits and the Skyhawks to move runners into scoring position three times.

Fort Lewis left six runners on base, with no stronger scoring opportunity than with bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning. However, the Golden Eagles made a diving stop on a ground ball back through the middle to halt the Skyhawks scoring opportunity. FLC threatened just once more at the top of the third inning on a two-out double from Tenorio off the wall in left-center. Alexander recorded a hit in her first collegiate at-bat, Allieghfaye Abbie picked up her first hit, and Niccum led all players with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.

Hawai'i Hilo 5, Fort Lewis 1
Fort Lewis burst out of the gate with life against the Vulcans, responding to Hawai'i Hilo's one-run top-half of the first inning with a score of its own, scoring Alyssa Fockler–who walked in the second at-bat of the frame–on an RBI double to center field off the bat of Izzy Cueva. The Vulcans scored once more at the top of the second inning to recapture the lead, and erupted for three runs in the top of the fourth to pull away.

Addison Gavigan (0-1) gave up five earned runs on five hits and nine walks against four strikeouts in four innings before Hailie Mann (0-0) came in on relief and held UHH to two hits the rest of the way. Janessa Santos (1-0) tossed a complete game en route to the Vulcans' first win of the season, allowing one unearned run on five hits and three walks. Santos led all pitchers with five strikeouts.

Hawai'i Hilo's Rayna White led all players with three hits in four at-bats, and Lexie Tilton led her squad with two runs scored. Three different Vulcans notched RBIs. UHH had seven total hits, including doubles from Tilton and Ke'alohi Markham. Tenorio was the only Skyhawk to record two hits, with Kaylee Kinney recording her first collegiate hit to match Izzy Cueva and Alexander with one hit each.

Notes
-Concordia Irvine and Hawai'i Hilo each lead Fort Lewis 4-0 and 5-0 all-time, respectively.
