One of the finest all-around athletes in Fort Lewis College history, Cephus Weatherspoon was a rare three-sport letter winner, earning three letters in basketball and two each in football and track & field.

Prior to arriving in Durango, Weatherspoon was a two-time All-American at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, where he specialized in the quarter mile. He was also an all-conference basketball player at Mesa.

Although he was originally recruited to Fort Lewis College for his basketball and track skills, Weatherspoon was most known for his exploits on the gridiron. He became one of the first players in Fort Lewis College history to be drafted by a National Football League club when the New Orleans Saints took him in the 13th round of the 1972 draft.

He played for the Saints from 1972-74 as a wide receiver and return specialist before being traded to the Denver Broncos during the 1974 season. He remained with the Broncos through 1975, at which point he signed with the Southern California Suns of the World Football League, where he ended his professional career.

He applied his education to a career in pharmaceutical sales for many years, having graduated from Fort Lewis College in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and a minor in bioscience.

He was a partner in Weatherspoon's Professional Cleaning Service, a company he started with his brother. He has served as the regional sales manager for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream in Southern California.

Weatherspoon currently resides in Brea, Calif.
