Lou Garretson — perhaps one of the finest running backs ever to wear the green and gold — was a do-it-all kind of player for the Aggies in 1954 and 1955. His teammates estimate his all-purpose running output (combined rushing, receiving, kickoff and punt return yards) to have been more than 200 yards per game.

For his efforts on the field, Mr. Garretson earned all-conference and second team All-America honors while at Fort Lewis A&M Junior College.

Garretson was heavily recruited by four-year colleges, and chose to continue his education at the University of Denver. Although he made the Pioneer team, he quit football to concentrate on his education. After choosing elementary education with a minor in physical education, he taught for 27 years.

Garretson died on Oct. 3, 1988. He was 53.
