Jim Miller's Nordic skiing career is among the most storied in the entire country, let alone at Fort Lewis College. A three-time national Junior Olympian from 1964-66, he was the 1966 national champion in the Nordic combined event and was named the top U.S. Junior Nordic Skier in 1966. A skier whose career-included success in cross-country, jumping and alpine events, he was named to the U.S. National Team the same year he would begin college.

A four-year letter winner from 1967-70, Miller was a two-time NCAA national champion in Nordic combined in 1968 and '70, helping the Raiders to a third place NCAA finish as a senior. At the same time, he also skied on the national and international levels. Miller represented his country at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble and the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. He had numerous top ten finishes in Europe, including a fifth place in the combined cross-country and a tenth place in the Nordic combined at the prestigious Holmenkollen.
Miller also competed in three World University Games, was chosen to carry the American Flag in the 1968 opening ceremonies and was selected to light the cauldron at the 1972 opening ceremonies. At the National level, he won the Nordic combined three times, the jump title once, and was a silver medallist in Cross Country.

Miller graduated from Fort Lewis College with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1974.
