Tommy Campbell earned one letter in basketball (1946) and two in football (1946, 1947) for the Aggies. He returned to Fort Lewis College in 1957-58 as head football coach and guided his gridders to a 6-2-1 record. His career winning percentage of .722 remains among the best of any football coach in Fort Lewis College's junior or four-year college history.

He coached five seasons at Farmington High School in the 1950s and 1960s, guiding the Scorpions to the New Mexico state championship game on two occasions. No team-college or high school-coached by Campbell finished with a losing record. A former player and coach at Farmington High School, Campbell was an original inductee into the Scorpion Athletics and Activities Hall of Fame in 1991.

Campbell retired from education in 1989 after a 40-year career as a coach and physical education and math teacher.

He died on May 30, 2007. Campbell was 80 years old.
